To draw this Rottweiler step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the rottweiler's head. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a bowl or a lid. Step 2: Draw a long, curved, horizontal line across the circle as a guide to help you place the rottweiler's facial features later. Draw this line slightly higher than the middle. Add a curved, vertical line on top for another guide.

Step 3: Directly on top of the horizontal line, draw two small circles as guides for the rottweiler's eyes. Pay attention to the size of these circles and to their distance from the vertical guide line.

Step 4: Draw another circle below the horizontal line as a guide for the rottweiler's muzzle. Use the four-marks method again to draw this circle. This circle should fit snugly between the horizontal construction line and the bottom edge of the big circle.

Step 5: Inside the muzzle, draw a small oval as a guide for the rottweiler's nose. This circle should be close to the top edge of the dog's muzzle. Don't draw it too small.

Step 6: On the top, right side of the head, draw a big V-shaped line as a guide for the first ear. Add a sloping line at the top to complete the triangular guide for the rottweiler's ear.

Step 7: On the left side, draw a thinner V-shaped line as a guide for the rottweiler's other ear. Draw a longer, curved line at the top to finish the guide.

Step 8: Below the rottweiler's head, draw two vertical lines as guides for the neck.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 9: Darken the small circle on the left side for the first eye. As you darken the circle, make the sides a bit pointier for a more eye-like shape. Draw an extra curved line under the eye for a droopy look. Use the circle on the right as a guide to draw the rottweiler's other eye the same way. Darken the shape and draw a curved line on the left side to elongate the shape. Draw a curved line at the bottom to make the dog's eye droop.

Step 10: Inside each eye, draw a dot for the pupils. Draw the pupils near the top because the rottweiler's eyes are drooping. Next to each pupil, draw a tiny circle that represents glare or highlight. Above each eye, draw a short, curved line for the eyelid. Add a short, curved line under each eye for the loose skin.

Step 11: Use the oval inside the muzzle as a guide to draw the dog's nose. Darken the edge of the shape but curve the left side in to form the nostril. Curve the right edge in to create the other nostril. The rottweiler's nostrils are basically tiny, thin ovals. Add a few lines at the bottom for wrinkles. Make the bottom part narrower than the original oval.

Step 12: Under the nose, draw a line that slopes the right for the first half of the rottweiler's top lip. The line should curve down, then to the right until it reaches the right edge of the initial circle. Draw a shorter line on the left for the other side of the top lip. This line should also end at the edge of the circle. Sketch lightly and when you get the lips right, darken the lines.

Step 13: Draw a few curved lines around the nose for the wrinkles on the dog's muzzle. Curve the left tip of the mouth upward for the loose top lip. Follow the basic path of the initial circle. Add a few more lines to the right of the nose to help shape the rottweiler's squarish muzzle.

Step 14: Draw a flat line under the mouth for the chin. Under the right tip of the mouth, draw a wavy line for the droopy jowls. Draw a few short, curved lines under the rottweiler's mouth for wrinkles. Draw a wavy line on the left side for more loose skin on the lips.

Step 15: Use the triangular shape on the top, right side as a guide to draw the rottweiler's first ear. Follow the basic path of the guide but make the shape of the dog's ear curvier as you darken the lines. Add a series of short strokes at the top for a furry texture.

Step 16: Use the triangular shape on the left side as a guide to draw the dog's other ear. Darken the right edge of the guide and draw an extra curved line next to it for a fold on the ear. Follow the path of the guide at the top but make the shape wavier as you darken the lines. Make the left edge of the rottweiler's ear narrower than the initial guide.

Step 17: Darken the top part of the main circle but make it flatter for a blockier head. Follow the left edge of the initial circle to create the side of the dog's head. Make the left edge of the head narrower than the initial circle for a more square-like shape. On the right side, draw a couple of curved lines from the mouth to the ear to finish up the shape of the rottweiler's head.

Step 18: Draw a small shape above the eye on the left for the typical rottweiler markings. The marking consists of a small, V-shaped line at the bottom with a curved line made up of short strokes at the top. Draw a similar mark over the eye on the right but make it a bit bigger because of the perspective. Draw a wide, V-shaped line at the bottom and an arc at the top that's made up of short strokes. Draw a series of lines around the eyes for wrinkles and to emphasize the rottweiler's thick brow. Add a series of short strokes on the right side of the face for fur and structure.

Step 19: Go over the lines under the head using short strokes for the thick, furry neck. Draw a series of curved lines that are made up of short strokes under the head for the loose skin on the dog's neck.

Step 20: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your rottweiler drawing for extra detail. Rottweilers are mainly black, so use a dark value when you shade. As you add the black value, leave certain areas, like the folds on the ear, slightly lighter to give them more shape. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Leave the markings over the eyes, the eyes and the muzzle blank for now. Use strokes that go in the general direction of the dog's fur. The fur mainly radiates out from the middle. You can also start with a light value at first, and then gradually build up to the darker value. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.

Continue adding the dark value all over the rottweiler's head, except for the eyes, the markings above the eyes, the muzzle and the neck. Use a dark value for the dog's eyes but don't overlap the tiny circle that represents glare. Use a slightly lighter value on the bottom of the eyes to give them a rounder look. Use a dark value for the nose, especially on the nostrils. Use a slightly lighter value for the top part of the dog's nose for highlight. Shade the muzzle using a light value and use a medium value under the nose for shadow. Use a light value for the markings over the rottweiler's eyes too.

Shade the chin and neck using a slightly darker value, especially on the creases. Add a few dots on the muzzle for the base of the rottweiler's whiskers. Use a darker value to further shape the muzzle. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for a more accurate depiction of a rottweiler. Draw a few long strokes on the muzzle for whiskers. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
