Written step-by-step video tutorial:
For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the first part of mosasaurus' body. First draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides. If you do want a perfect circle, trace the outer rim of a coin, a lid or any other object with a circular edge. The circle on the right should be smaller and should be placed lower than the one on the left. The farther apart you place your circles, the longer your mosasaurus will be.
Step 2: Draw an arc on the left side of the circle on the left for the second part of the guide for the body. The resulting shape of the arc and the circle combined should look similar to an egg. Now draw another similar arc to the right of the circle on the right. The resulting shape should also be similar to an egg but pointing in the opposite direction. Draw two lines that connect the two egg-like shapes to complete the guide for the mosasaurus' body.
Step 3: Draw a thin, long arc on the top left side of the body as a guide for the first part of the mosasaurus' head. Sketch lightly at first to get the size and position of the guide right. Pay attention to the size of this arc in relation to the rest of the dinosaur's body.
Step 4: Draw another thin, long arc under the first one as the guide for the dinosaur's open lower jaw. This arc should be a bit thinner than the top one. The resulting shape of the mosasaurus' head should be similar to a greater-than sign (>).
Step 5: Draw a curved line on the top right side of the body as the first part of the guide for the tail. The shape of the line should be similar to an imperfect letter S. Sketch lightly at first to get the curvature right. The longer you make this line, the longer the mosasaurus' tail will be.
