To draw this Dog step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

 

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw a circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for the front part of the cavalier King Charles spaniel's body. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: To the right, draw another circle as a guide for the back portion of the body. Draw this circle using the four- marks method too. It should be a bit smaller than the first circle. Draw the circles close together, otherwise the spaniel's body will be too long.

 

 

Step 3: On the top, left side, draw another circle as a guide for the cavalier King Charles spaniel's head. This circle should be a little over half the size of the first circle. The edges of the circles should touch so that the dog's neck doesn't end up too long.

 

Step 4: Draw a curved, horizontal line across the head to help you place the spaniel's facial features later. Add a curved, vertical line on the top, left side of the dog's head for another construction line.

 

 

Step 5: Draw a small circle inside the head as a guide for the dog's muzzle. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the head. It should fit snugly between the horizontal construction line and the lower edge of the cavalier King Charles spaniel's head.

Step 6: To the right of the head, draw a big, curved line as a guide for the spaniel's first ear. This guide should extend down over the body. The shape should be similar to the letter U. On the left side of the head, draw a curved line as a guide for the dog's other ear.

 

Step 7: Under the first circle, draw two short, vertical lines as guides for the cavalier King Charles spaniel's front legs. The bottom of the lines should bend to the left to indicate where the joints and feet will be.

 

 

Step 8: Under the circle on the right, draw two longer lines as guide s for the dog's hind legs. These lines should slope toward the right before bending at the bottom to indicate where the spaniel's feet will be.

 

Step 9: Draw a line that connects the head to the body and two lines that connect the first two circles. On the right side of the cavalier King Charles spaniel's body, draw a long, sloping line as a guide for the tail.

 

 

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 10: Lightly sketch the dog's eyes inside the head as two small circles. Use the initial lines as guides. When you get the size and position of the eyes right, darken the lines. As you darken the shapes, make the sides pointier for the corners of the eyes. Add a curved line over each eye for extra detail.

 

Step 11: Inside each eye, off to the side, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. In the middle of each eye, draw a tiny dot for the spaniel's pupils. Shade the insides of the eyes but don't overlap the tiny glare circles. As you shade, use a value that's a bit lighter than the pupils. Add a series of strokes around the dog's eyes for extra detail on the fur.

 

 

Step 12: Inside the muzzle, near the top, left side, lightly sketch a small oval for the dog's nose. When you get the size and position right, darken the top line but make it wavier. Darken the right side but curve the line inward to create the nostril. Make the bottom part of the shape narrower and add a short, vertical line at the bottom. Darken the left edge and curve the line inward for the other nostril.

 

Step 13: Under the nose, draw a line that curves to the right for the first half of the cavalier King Charles spaniel's mouth. The top lip droops down a bit, so dip the line in the middle. The end of the line should stretch all the way to the edge of the initial circle. On the left, draw a smaller, curved line for the other side of the dog's mouth.

 

 

Step 14: Darken the left side of the initial circle to create the shape of the cavalier King Charles spaniel's muzzle. Darken the top part too but use a series of short strokes to indicate fur.

Step 15: Draw a series of curved lines under the mouth for the dog's wrinkly chin. Follow the lower edge of the initial circle as you draw the shape of the chin.

 

Step 16: Use the big U-shaped line on the right as a guide to draw the first ear. Follow the path of the guide but make the edge of the spaniel's ear curvier as you darken the lines. Along the bottom edge, draw a series of short vertical lines for the tips of the fur. Darken the right edge of the shape and add a few short strokes at the top for more fur.

 

 

Step 17: Use the big circle as a guide to draw the rest of the cavalier King Charles spaniel's head. The top of the head should be made up of two wide, curved lines. Curve the left edge of the head in toward the eye to create the brow. Make the left side of the dog's head narrower by bringing the edge closer to the eye. Draw a series of short strokes above the eyes to emphasize the brows.

 

Step 18: Darken the line on the left side for the other ear but make the shape a bit wavier. Draw a series of short, curved lines along the bottom for the tips of the dog's fur.

 

 

Step 19: Lightly sketch the shape of the front leg around the second guide line from the left. Add a curved line at the bottom for the dog's paw. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Draw a couple of short, curved lines at the tip of the paw to separate the toes. The right edge of the spaniel's leg should be made up of short strokes for the longer fur found there.

Step 20: Draw the spaniel's other front leg around the guide line on the left the same way. Don't draw the top part of the leg, as it will be mostly blocked by the body.

 

Step 21: Use the line on the right as a guide to draw the cavalier King Charles spaniel's first hind leg. Lightly sketch the shape of the leg around the guide. Make the top part of the leg wide. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Use a series of short strokes at the top to represent fur. Add a couple of curved lines at the bottom to separate the dog's toes.

 

 

Step 22: Use the last line under the spaniel's body as a guide to draw the other hind leg the same way. Draw the shape of the leg around the guide line. Don't draw the top part that will be hidden behind the dog's body.

 

Step 23: Use the remaining shapes as guide to draw the rest of the cavalier King Charles spaniel's body. Draw a series of short strokes along the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the furry body. Use longer strokes along the underside of the dog's body for the shaggier fur found there. The fur at the top lays flat, so just darken the top edge of the initial guides.

 

 

Step 24: Draw a couple of wavy lines around the guide on the right for the spaniel's tail. At the bottom, draw a series of short strokes for the furry tip.

Step 25: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

 

 

Final Step: Add some shading to your cavalier King Charles spaniel drawing for extra detail. Use a dark value for the nose. Draw a curved line around the eyes and shade the insides of the shapes using a medium value. Shade the ears using a medium value too. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Spaniels come in a variety of coat patterns, so you can shade yours differently if you'd like. If you have a pet cavalier King Charles spaniel or a similar breed, try to duplicate its coat pattern on your drawing! Add a few big, random shapes on the dog's body and shade them in using a medium value. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Add some shading to your cavalier King Charles spaniel drawing using a light value to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. As you shade, use strokes that go in the general direction of the dog's fur.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps to ground the dog so it doesn't appear to be floating. If you'd like, you can add more strokes on the white section of the body to emphasize the fur. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
