To draw this Jackalope step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

 

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw a circle near the bottom of the paper as a guide for the top part of the jackalope's body. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: On the top, left side, draw another circle as a guide for the head using the same technique. This circle should be about one-third the size of the first one. Don't draw these circles too far apart, otherwise the jackalope's neck will be too long.

 

 

Step 3: To the left of the head, draw a small arc as a guide for the jackalope's muzzle. Make the left edge of the mark a bit flat.

 

Step 4: Draw a curved, horizontal line across the entire head as a guide to help you place the jackalope's facial features later.

 

 

Step 5: On top of the head, draw two long, thin arcs as guides for the jackalope's ears. Tilt the arcs to the right and make the tips pointy. Pay attention to their size in relation to the head.

Step 6: Between the ears, draw a curved, vertical line as a guide for the jackalope's first antler. To the left of the ears, draw a line that curves to the left, then up as a guide for the other antler.

 

Step 7: Draw a long, curved line under the head as a guide for the jackalope's neck. Add a smaller line on the right side too.

 

 

Step 8: Add the guide for the lower part of the jackalope's body by first making a small mark on the lower, right side. Connect the small mark to the first circle using curved lines to create a big, wide arc.

 

Step 9: Under the body, draw two long , vertical lines as guides for the front legs. Bend the lower tips of the lines a bit to indicate where the jackalope's feet will be.

 

 

Step 10: Under the body, on the right side, draw two oval-like shapes as guides for the jackalope's hind feet. The sides of these shapes should be pointy and the bottoms flat. It's okay to overlap the previous guides.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

 

Step 11: Inside the head, on top of the guideline, lightly sketch a small circle for the jackalope's eye. When you get the position and size right, darken the shape. Make the top part thick for the eyelashes. Make the sides of the eye pointy. Inside, draw a tiny circle to represent glare and a big dot for the pupil. Shade the inside of the eye but don't overlap the tiny glare circle. As you shade the eye, use a value that's lighter than the pupil. Draw a couple of curved lines around the jackalope's eye for extra detail.

 

 

Step 12: At the tip of the muzzle, lightly sketch a small, V-shaped line for the nose. As you darken the line, make it wavier. Add an extra curved line at the bottom for the nostril. Draw an extra curved line at the top and bottom to complete the shape of the jackalope's nose.

 

Step 13: Below the nose, draw a line that curves to the right for the first half of the jackalope's mouth. Use a series of short strokes along the bottom to indicate fur. Add a smaller line on the left for the other side of the mouth. Draw a curved line along the path of the guide for the front part of the muzzle.

 

 

Step 14: Draw a small line under the mouth for the chin and a line above the nose for the top of the muzzle. Draw a series of short strokes on the right side for extra detail on the jackalope's furry muzzle.

Step 15: Darken the arc on the top, right side of the head for the jackalope's first ear. Draw the bottom part of the ear inside the head. Use short, curved lines to give the base of the ear structure. Within the shape, draw a couple of long lines and short strokes for the ear opening and fur.

 

Step 16: Use the curved line to the left of the ear as a guide to draw the jackalope's first antler. At the top, draw the shape of the antler around the guide. Make the top part pointy. On the left, draw another long, vertical, pointy shape for a second antler branch. Below, draw another antler branch, this time with a horizontal orientation. It's okay to overlap the other ear's guide. Make the bottom part of the antler thick. Before you close off the shape at the bottom, add a smaller branch.

 

 

Step 17: Use the curved line on the left as a guide to draw the jackalope's other antler the same way. Follow the path of the guide, but at the top, curve the line toward the left to create the first branch. Make the top pointy. Draw the second branch of the antler around the initial guide line. Follow the path of the guide and draw two more branches along the way before closing off the shape at the bottom. Jackalopes are fictional creatures, so you can draw the antlers on your drawing differently if you want.

 

Step 18: Darken the shape of the second arc to create the jackalope's other ear. Most of this ear will be behind the antlers, so only draw the visible part peeking through.

 

 

Step 19: Darken the front part of the initial guide to create the front of the head. Use a series of short strokes along the lower, right side of the initial circle to complete the shape of the jackalope's furry head.

Step 20: Use the vertical line on the right as a guide to draw the first front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the jackalope's leg around it. Make the top part wide. Make the bottom part round for the foot. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Use short strokes at the top for fur. Draw a couple of short, curved lines at the bottom to separate the toes.

 

Step 21: Draw the other front leg around the other vertical line the same way. Don't draw the top part, as it will be hidden behind the jackalope's body. Add the curved foot and toes at the bottom.

 

 

Step 22: Darken the shape on the right for the jackalope's hind foot. Add two curved lines on the front for the toes. Above the foot, draw a couple of curved lines that are made up of short strokes for the folded leg.

 

Step 23: Use the remaining lines as guide to draw the rest of the jackalope's body. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the body. Use a series of short strokes along the path of the guides to create a furry texture.

 

 

Step 24: Darken the visible part of the oval-like guide to create the other hind leg. On the lower, right side of the body, draw a curved shape that's made up of short strokes for the fluffy tail.

Step 25: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

 

 

Final Step: Add some shading to your jackalope drawing for extra detail. Jackalopes are fictional, so you can shade yours however you'd like. Add spots, stripes or even color it! For this look, use a medium value all over the body. Leave an area around the jackalope's eyes, nose, mouth and edge of the ear blank. Separate each individual stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates a more fur-like texture. Add the value lightly at first and gradually build up to the level of darkness that you like. Use a lighter value on the underside of the jackalope's body for a bit of lighter fur found there. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps to ground the jackalope so it doesn't appear to be floating.
