The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw a circle as a guide for the front part of the mosquito's body called the thorax. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: On the lower, right side, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the mosquito's head. This circle should be about one- third the size of the first circle.

Step 3: Far off to the left side, make a small mark for the first part of the back of the body called the thorax. Draw a long line that connects the mark to the circle for the top edge of the thorax. Draw a long, curved line at the bottom to complete the shape of the mosquito's thin, long thorax.

 

Step 4: Draw two small lines that connect the head to the body to create the guide for the neck. On the lower, right side of the head, draw a long, sloping line for the mosquito's mouth part, which is called the proboscis. Inside the thorax, on the right side, draw a line that's similar to an upside-down letter V for the top part of the first leg. Make the line longer and angle it to the right to complete the guide for the mosquito's first leg.

 

 

Step 5: On the left side of the thorax, draw another line similar to the front leg as a guide for the middle leg. This line should be the mirror image of the first leg and bend to the left. The top part of this leg should be taller. The combined lines for the mosquito's front and middle legs should be similar to the letter M. On the left side, draw a similar line as a guide for the last leg. This final line should be longer than the other lines, and at the bottom it should slope more to the left.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined mosquito drawing.

 

Step 6: Inside the head, draw a shape that almost covers the whole circle for the mosquito's big compound eye. The shape of the eye should be similar to a triangle with rounded corners that's tilted to the right.

Step 7: At the top of the head, draw two long, curved lines for the mosquito's antennae. The bottom part should be thicker than the top. Don't make the lines too long.

 

Step 8: Draw a series of short strokes along the left edge of the small circle for the mosquito's fuzzy head. At the bottom of the lower antenna, draw a curved line for the base.

 

 

Step 9: Below the mosquito's eye, draw a couple of small, curved lines for the top part of the mouth.

Step 10: Below the eye, draw a curved line for the top part of the mosquito's main feeding tube. Draw a parallel curved line to make the curved shape at the top thicker. Darken the initial guide line and make the shape thicker to finish the main feeding tube.

 

Step 11: Use the angled line on the right as a guide to draw the mosquito's first leg. Darken the guides and make the shapes thicker by adding parallel lines next to them. Mosquitoes have thin legs, so don't make these shapes too thick. Curve the line below the circle so that the base of the leg sits under the thorax. The mosquito's leg should be made up of separate segments. The segments are indicated by the way the guide bends.

Step 12: Use the long, angled line in the middle as a guide to draw the second leg. Darken the guide lines and make the shape of the mosquito's leg thicker by drawing parallel lines. Extend the line on the right below the initial circle shape of the thorax. At the bottom, curve the shape of the leg up again toward the thorax using a couple of short lines. Darken the bottom half of the guide and make the shape thicker to finish this leg.

 

Step 13: Use the long line on the left as a guide to draw the mosquito's last leg the same way. Don't overlap the shape of the middle leg as you curve the base of this leg toward the thorax. Like before, darken the guides and make the shape of the leg thicker. Create new segments where the guide line bends. Add a few extra lines at the bottom tip.

 

 

Step 14: Starting on the left of the mosquito's thorax, above the abdomen, draw a thin, long shape for the wing. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape right. The shape should be similar to a very flat oval. Don't overlap the legs as you darken the shape of the wing. Make the sides of the wing pointy. The mosquito's other wing won't be visible from this angle.

Step 15: Darken the initial circle guide to create the shape of the thorax. Make the sides of the mosquito's thorax longer than the initial circle. And don't overlap the legs as you darken the lines.

 

Step 16: Darken the long shape on the left to create the mosquito's abdomen. You can make this shape rounder and thicker to indicate a bigger, post-meal abdomen.

Step 17: Draw the mosquito's legs on the other side of the body using long lines. The front leg on the other side should be below the neck. Add a few short lines above thorax for the tops of the legs. Only the tops of the folded legs from the other side should be visibly. Add the mosquito's middle leg on the other side below the thorax.

 

Step 18: Draw a small, triangular shape on top of the thorax for the folded joint of the last leg on the other side. Add the bottom half of the mosquito's final leg below the abdomen. The leg should slope to the left. Sketch lightly at first. Darken the line only when you get the shape right.

 

 

Step 19: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

 

Final Step: Add some shading to your mosquito drawing for extra detail. Use a dark value for the eye. Use a lighter value at the top of the eye for highlight. Use a series of short strokes on the head for tiny hairs. Add some short strokes on the antennae too. Use a medium value to shade most of the mosquito's body. Use a slightly darker value as you shade the areas of the legs that are near the joints. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Shade the mosquito's wing using a light value. Draw a few curved lines inside the shape for the veins. Use a series of tiny, curved lines for the hair that covers the thorax. Make the top area lighter for highlight. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for a more accurate depiction of a mosquito. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.

Use a light value to shade the mosquito's abdomen. Because you're using a light value, it's okay if you overlap the legs a bit. Using a medium value, add a series of thick stripes along the abdomen.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps to ground the mosquito so it doesn't appear to be floating. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You can add a bit of shadow to the underside of the mosquito's body using a darker value to give the figure more dimension and volume.
