To draw this Woolly Rhino step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw a circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for the front part of the woolly rhinoceros' body. First make four small marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a bowl or a lid. Step 2: To the left, draw another circle as a guide for the back portion of the body. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle too. Make this circle smaller. The edges of the circles should touch. If you space the circles too far apart, the woolly rhinoceros' body will be too long.

Step 3: On the left side, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the woolly rhinoceros' head. The edges of the circles should touch. Place this circle close to the bottom.

 

Step 4: Under the head, draw a long, curved line as a guide for the woolly rhinoceros' muzzle. This curved line should be similar to a big letter U that's tilted.

 

 

Step 5: On the top, left side of the woolly rhino's head, draw two tiny arcs as guides for the ears.

Step 6: On top of the muzzle, draw a long, curved line as a guide for the woolly rhinoceros' horn.

 

Step 7: Draw two curved lines that connect the head to the body to create the guide for the neck. Make the top line long and curved to create a hump. The bottom line should be short. Draw two more lines that connect the first two circles to finish the guide for the woolly rhinoceros' torso.

Step 8: To the right of the head, draw a long, angled line as a guide for the first front leg. The angles of the line indicate where the joints will be. To the right, draw a shorter line as a guide for the woolly rhino's other leg.

 

Step 9: On the right side, draw two more angled lines as guides for the woolly rhino's hind legs. The first line should start inside the circle. Pay attention to how these lines bend to indicate the joints.

 

 

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 10: Inside the muzzle, close to the edge of the initial circle, draw a tiny circle for the woolly rhinoceros' eye. When you get the size and position of the eye right, darken the shape but make the sides pointier. Inside the eye, draw a tiny dot for the pupil. Notice how small the eye is in relation to the rest of the head. Draw a couple of short, curved lines around the eye for wrinkles. Add a few short strokes above and below the eye to represent fur.

 

Step 11: Near the bottom of the initial arc, draw a small, oval-like shape for the nostril. Below the nostril, draw a short, curved line for the woolly rhinoceros' mouth. Darken a small section of the initial arc for the front of the muzzle. The mouth should curve up toward the eye. Under the mouth, draw a short, curved line for the lower lip.

Step 12: Use the long line on the muzzle as a guide to draw the horn. Draw a broken line at the bottom for the base. Add another curved line on the left to make the horn thicker. Keep the tip pointy. Darken the initial guide line. Woolly rhinos' horns were very long.

 

Step 13: Above the eye, draw a small, triangular shape for the woolly rhinoceros' second horn.

 

 

Step 14: Darken the arcs on the head to create the ears but make the tops a bit pointier. Inside the shapes, draw a series of short strokes for the fur found in there.

Step 15: Use the Initial shapes as guides to draw the rest of the woolly rhinoceros' head. Draw a series of short strokes along the outer edges of the guides to create the furry shape of the head. Don't overlap the shapes of the horns as you add the fur to the top. Use longer strokes for the shaggier fur found along the underside of the head.

 

Step 16: Use the angled line on the left as a guide to draw the first front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. Make the leg thick. The leg should be especially wide at the top. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Draw a couple of short arcs at the bottom for the woolly rhinoceros' nails. Use a series of short strokes as you darken the right side of the leg for the long fur.

Step 17: Draw a thick shape around the guide line on the right for the second front leg. Use short strokes to create the woolly rhinoceros' fur and add the nails at the bottom using a couple of small arcs.

 

Step 18: Use the long, angled line on the right as a guide to draw the first hind leg the same way. Lightly sketch the shape of the leg around the guide. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Make the shape of the leg thick. Use short strokes to create the woolly rhino's long fur. Curve the shape to indicate the joints. Draw a couple of short arcs at the bottom for the nails.

 

 

Step 19: Draw a series of short strokes around the angled line on the right to create the other hind leg. The very top of this leg will be behind the woolly rhinoceros' body, so don't draw it. Don't forget the nails at the bottom!

Step 20: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the woolly rhinoceros' body. Use a series of short strokes along the outer edges of the guides to create the shape of the furry body. The fur on the hump should be standing on end, while the fur on the rump should be more flat. Use longer strokes on the underside of the body for the shaggier fur found here. Curve the strokes a bit. The longer the strokes are, the longer the woolly rhino's fur will be. On the right side, draw a small clump of fur that's made up of short strokes for the tail.

Step 21: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

 

 

Final Step: Add some shading to your woolly rhinoceros drawing for extra detail. Using series of short strokes, add a medium value all over the rhino's body. Nobody is exactly sure what woolly rhinos looked like, so you can add spots, stripes or even color your rhino! For a more detailed guide on how to shade, check out this tutorial: How to shade.

As you shade, use strokes that go in the general direction of the woolly rhinoceros' fur. Separate each individual stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates a more fur-like texture. Add the value lightly at first and gradually build up to the level of darkness that you like.

Make the fur along the bottom a bit darker to create shadows and make the figure more three-dimensional. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Continue shading until the woolly rhinoceros' entire body is covered with fur. Use a light value for the horns.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps ground the woolly rhinoceros so it doesn't appear to be floating. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
