To draw this cartoon Thanksgiving Turkey step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Lightly sketch two small ovals for the Thanksgiving turkey's eyes. When you get the shapes and sizes right, darken the eyes. Inside each eye, draw a couple of tiny circles to represent highlight. Shade in the eyes but don't overlap the tiny circles inside. Don't draw the bird's eyes too close together. The turkey's eye on the left should be a tiny bit smaller than the one on the right.

Step 2: Below the eyes, off to the left, draw a small line that's similar to a less-than sign (<) for the beak. Close off the Thanksgiving turkey's beak on the right so that the finished shape is a small cone. To the right of the beak, draw a curved line for the fleshy bit of skin called the wattle.

Step 3: To the left of the turkey's eyes, draw a line that curves up for the first part of the head. Draw another long line that curves under the bird's face for the cheek and bottom of the head. Sketch the lines lightly at first. Darken the lines only when you get the shapes right.

Step 4: At the top, draw a long, horizontal line for the bottom part of the turkey's Pilgrim hat. Pay attention to how high above the eyes this line is. It should slope down slightly to the right. Don't make the line too short. Extend it far to the right side.

Step 5: To the right of the turkey's face, draw a long line that curves to the left for the rest of the head.

Step 6: At the top, draw a long line that's parallel to the bottom of the Pilgrim hat for the hat's brim. Extend the sides of the lines so that they curve and meet the turkey's head and complete the shape of the rim.

Step 7: Above the brim, draw two vertical lines that slope inward a bit for the top part of the Pilgrim hat. Close off the shape with a curved, short line at the top.

Step 8: Draw a curved, horizontal line across the middle of the Pilgrim hat for the belt. Inside the belt, close to the left side, draw two short, vertical lines for the outside edges of the buckle. Within the vertical lines, draw a small, rectangular shape to finish the buckle.

Step 9: On the lower, right side of the Thanksgiving turkey's head, draw a couple of curved lines that come to a point for the wing. Don't make the bird's wing too big. It should be smaller than the head.

Step 10: Far down below the head, make a small mark to indicate the bottom of the turkey's body. Draw a long, curved line from the left side of the head to the mark to create the front part of the body. Connect the mark to the wing for the bottom of the body. Above the wing, add a curved line to finish the bird's body.

Step 11: Under the Thanksgiving turkey's body, on the right, draw a curved line for the top part of the leg. Below that, draw a series of short lines for the foot and toes. Three lines pointing to the left and one to the right. To the left, draw the same thing but a bit smaller for the bird's other leg.

Step 12: To the right of the head, draw three small, curved lines for the top part of the feathers on the turkey's tail. Draw a series of short lines below the arcs to separate the feathers.

Step 13: Continue drawing small, curved lines toward the bottom to complete the feathers on the Thanksgiving turkey's tail. Draw a longer line to connect the bottom of the feathers to the body and add smaller lines inside the shape.

Step 14: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your cartoon Thanksgiving turkey drawing permanent. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

Final Step: Color your cartoon Thanksgiving turkey drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use dark brown for the Pilgrim hat. Use light brown, yellow-orange and yellow for belt and buckle on the hat. Use brown for the rest of the bird's body. Color lightly and slowly build up to the shade that you like. Use red for the wattle and the top part of the tail. Color the beak yellow and the middle of the tail light brown. Use dark brown for the bottom of the turkey's tail. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
