To draw this Sperm Whale step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the left side of the paper as a guide for the first part of the sperm whale's head. To draw the circle, first make four small marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: To the right, draw another circle using the four-marks method. This circle should be a little smaller than the first one. Place it a bit higher than the first one too. Don't place the circles too close together. The farther to the right you draw this circle, the longer the sperm whale's body will be.

Step 3: On the far left side, make a small mark to start the guide for the front of the sperm whale's head. Connect the mark to the top part of the first circle using a curved line. The left side of the guide should be flat. Connect the mark to the bottom edge of the first circle too. The overall shape of this guide should be similar to the letter U on its side.

Step 4: Connect the circles using two horizontal lines to complete the guide for the sperm whale's torso.

Step 5: On the right side, draw two long lines that curve downward as guides for the back of the sperm whale's body. The left side of this guide should be wide and then gradually get narrower until it ends at a pointy tip on the right. You can make the lines longer if you'd like. The longer you draw the lines, the longer the whale's body will be.

Step 6: To the right of the first circle, draw a curved line as a guide for the sperm whale's flipper. The shape of this guide should be similar to a letter U that's tilted to the left.

Step 7: Below the tip on the right, draw a short, horizontal line as guide for the tail. Use two sloping lines to connect the horizontal line to the body to complete the guide for the sperm whale's tail.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 8: Inside the first circle, near the lower, right side, draw a tiny oval for the sperm whale's eye. Lightly shade the inside of the oval for the eye's iris and pupil. Don't draw the eye too big. Notice how small it is in relation to the rest of the head. Draw a couple of short lines above and below the whale's eye for the eyelids. Draw longer curved lines around the eyes for extra detail on the structure.

Step 9: Near the bottom of the head, draw a long, wavy horizontal line for the top part of the open mouth. The line should end at the edge of the first circle. Sketch lightly at first and darken the line when you get the shape right. Below this line draw a sloping horizontal line for the lower part of the sperm whale's open mouth. Follow the path of the guide at the bottom to draw another horizontal line for the lower jaw. The lines curve on the left side to form the front part of the open mouth.

Step 10: Draw a series of tiny triangles along the inside of the open mouth for the sperm whale's teeth. Stop drawing the teeth before the line ends on the right. Leave room at the top for more teeth. Draw more small triangles along the top edge of the lower jaw for another row of teeth.

Step 11: Use the big arc on the left side as a guide to draw the rest of the sperm whale's head. Darken the path of the guide to create the shape of the blocky head. Curve the line to the right toward the mouth before you hit the bottom of the guide. This line doesn't meet the top of the whale's mouth but curves under it, just above the teeth.

Step 12: On the top, left side of the sperm whale's head, draw a short, curved line for the blowhole.

Step 13: Use the U-shaped line in the middle of the body as a guide to draw the sperm whale's flipper. Darken the guide but make the bottom part narrower. At the top close up the shape a bit more and add some lines for creases.

Step 14: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the sperm whale's body. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the body. Don't overlap the shape of the flipper as you darken the lines for the whale's body. Don't darken the tip of the guide on the lower, right side.

Step 15: Darken the right side of the shape on the right for the sperm whale's tail. Make the lines curvier. Curve the bottom line up toward the tip. At the top add an extra curved line to make the shape thicker.

Step 16: Darken the left side of the initial guide to finish the shape of the sperm whale's tail. Make the lines curvier.

Step 17: At the top of the second initial circle, draw a curved line for the sperm whale's dorsal hump. Draw more curved lines between the first hump and tail for the ridges on the back. The ridges should decrease in size the closer to the tail they are. Draw a couple of curved lines along the bottom for the ridges on the whale's underside.

Step 18: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your drawing for extra detail. Sperm whales aren't too colorful, so just apply a medium value as a base for the whole body. Use a slightly darker value to shade the hump and ridges on the back. Use a very light value around the open mouth and around the eye. Add a slightly darker value throughout the body to give the figure more structure and shape. For a more detailed guide on how to shade, check out this tutorial: How to shade.

Add the value lightly at first and gradually build up to the level of darkness that you like. Use a dark value at the bottom for a shadow that gives the sperm whale more dimension and volume. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for a more accurate depiction of a sperm whale. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
