The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the middle of the page as a guide for the front part of the samoyed dog's body. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: To the left of the circle, draw a big arc by first making a small mark on the far left. Connect the mark to the circle using long, curved lines to complete the shape of the arc guide.

Step 3: On the top, right, draw another circle using the four-marks method as a guide for the samoyed's head. Pay attention to the size of this circle. It should be about half the size of the first circle. Draw this circle close to the first one. The bottom edges should overlap a bit.

Step 4: Draw a horizontal line across the head to help you place the samoyed's facial features later. Draw a shorter, vertical construction guide line on the top, right side.

Step 5: Draw a small circle on the lower, right side of the head as a guide for the samoyed's muzzle. This circle should fit snugly between the horizontal guide line and the bottom edge of the circle.

Step 6: Draw two small arcs on top of the head as guides for the samoyed's ears. Don't make these guides too big. Make the top parts of the arcs a bit pointy.

Step 7: Draw two vertical lines under the first circle as guides for the samoyed's legs. Bend the lines near the middle to indicate the joints and at the bottom for the dog's feet.

Step 8: Draw two more lines under the arc on the left side as guides for the samoyed's hind legs. The first line slopes and then bends at the bottom. The second line should bend at the top and bottom.

Step 9: Draw a curved line from the left side of the head to the body for the first part of the samoyed's fluffy neck. Draw a longer, curved line at the bottom as a guide for the fluffy part of the neck and chest. On the left side, draw a long line that curves up and then in toward the body as a guide for the dog's tail.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 10: Lightly sketch the samoyed's eyes inside the head as two small ovals. Use the initial lines as guides for placement. When you get the position and size of the eyes right, darken the lines. Make the sides pointier. Add some curved lines above and below the eye for extra detail. Use short strokes for fur. Darken the eye on the right too but make the shape narrower because the dog's head is turned. The inner corner of the eye should point down toward the muzzle. Add some lines around the eye for detail.

Step 11: Inside each eye draw a dot for the pupils. Shade the eyes except for a tiny circle off to the side to represent glare. As you shade the eyes, use a value that slightly lighter than the pupil. Use a value that's darker at the top and lighter at the bottom to give the eyeballs a rounder feel. If your drawing is too small, you can skip the glare circles and just shade in the entire eye. Add a few short strokes around the dog's eyes for a fur-like texture.

Step 12: Inside the samoyed's muzzle, near the right side, lightly sketch a small oval as a guide for the nose. When you get the position and size of the nose right, darken the shape. As you darken the right edge of the nose, curve the line inward to create the nostril. Curve the left side of the shape inward too for the other nostril. Add an extra curved line at the end to make this nostril a bit wider. Make the lower half of the dog's nose narrower and add a pointy shape at the bottom.

Step 13: Below the nose, draw a line that stretches to the left for the dog's mouth. Darken the left tip of the line and use short strokes along the path to represent fur. The line for the mouth should curve up near the lower point of the nose. Add a line below for the samoyed's lower lip.

Step 14: Use the initial small circle as a guide to draw the samoyed's muzzle. Follow the path of the circle on the right side and use short strokes to create the muzzle. Make the shape narrower. Draw a line below the mouth for the lower jaw. Make the left side curve more for the jowls.

Step 15: Use a series of short strokes to darken the shape on the top, left side of the head for the samoyed's ear. Draw a series of longer strokes within the shape for the longer fur found inside the ear. Draw the ear on the right the same way. Darken the initial path using short strokes. Add longer strokes inside for the fur. This should be a bit narrower than the dog's first ear.

Step 16: Use the remaining shapes and lines as guide to draw the rest of the dog's head. Use a series of short strokes along the outer path of the guides to create the shape of the furry head. On the right side, follow the path of the initial circle but make the lower part wider. Add some strokes on the bottom and along the left edge of the initial circle to shape the face. Add a few more strokes inside the head to give the samoyed's face more structure.

Step 17: Use the second line from the right as a guide to draw the first front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the samoyed's leg around it. When you get the shape of the leg right, darken the lines. Use short strokes on the left side for fur. The dog's leg should be wide at the top, and it should gradually get thinner toward the bottom. At the bottom, curve the shape to the right for the foot. Add a couple of lines inside for the toes.

Step 18: Use the line on the right as a guide to draw the dog's other leg the same way. Sketch the leg around the guide. Make the top part wider than the bottom. When you get the shape right, use short strokes to darken the leg. Curve the bottom tip toward the right to create the samoyed's small foot. Add a couple of short, curved lines inside the foot to separate the toes.

Step 19: Use the sloping line on the far left as a guide to draw the samoyed's first hind leg. Just like the front legs, first sketch the shape lightly around the guide. When you get the leg right, darken the lines. Make the shape wide at the top for the long, fluffy fur. Use a series of short strokes to darken the shape of the dog's leg, especially at the top. Make the bottom part curvy for the foot and add a couple of short lines inside for the toes.

Step 20: Use the line to the right as a guide to draw the other hind leg the same way. Curve the shape along the angles of the guide to create the joints on the leg. A big part of the top of the leg will be hidden by the samoyed's body, so just draw the bottom visible part.

Step 21: Draw a series of short strokes directly on top of the curved guide line on the body for the tail. Don't make the strokes too long or the samoyed's tail will appear shaggy instead of fluffy. At the bottom, curve the strokes to the right and then back up to create the bottom of the dog's tail resting on the body.

Step 22: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the samoyed dog's body. Darken the outer edges of the initial guides using short strokes to create the fluffy shape of the body. Don't overlap the shape of the tail as you darken the body. Use slightly longer strokes on the underside. Add a few short strokes inside the body to emphasize the furry texture.

Step 23: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your samoyed dog drawing to give the figure more dimension and volume. Use a dark value for the dog's ears and the nose. Use a light value for a section at the top of the nose for shine. Samoyeds are white, so use a light value to add shadows to the fur. As you shade, use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Shade lightly at first and slowly build up to the level of darkness you like. Use a slightly darker value along the bottom for the stronger shadows there. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for a more accurate depiction of a samoyed dog. If you have a samoyed dog or a similar breed, try to duplicate its fur on your drawing. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps to ground the dog so it doesn't appear to be floating.
