For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Draw a circle as a guide for the top part of the figeater beetle's body. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a bottle cap. Step 2: Inside the circle, draw a two intersecting lines that are similar to a plus sign. These are guide lines that will help you place the fig beetle's body features and appendages later on. The guides should divide the circle into roughly four equal halves.

Step 3: Under the circle, draw a big arc as a guide for the bottom half of the figeater beetle's body. This arc should be similar to a giant letter U. Pay attention to the size of this arc in relation to the circle.

Step 4: On top of the body, draw a small half-circle as a guide for the beetle's head. This half-circle should be quite small in relation to the body. Draw three angled lines on each side of the body as guides for the legs. Bend the lines to indicate the joints. The lines at the bottom should be the longest. Use the guides inside the body to help you determine the position of the legs.

That's it for the guidelines! From this point on, press down harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a figeater beetle.

Step 5: Draw two small ovals on the sides of the head for the figeater beetle's eyes. Above the eyes, draw two thin, curved shapes for the antennae. Add lines inside the antennae to create segments. Add a small oval on the end of each antennae for the rounded tip.

Step 6: Draw a curved line on top of the initial half-circle to create the fig beetle's head. Draw a wavy line inside the shape to give the head more structure. On the tip of the head, draw two more long, thin shapes and add lines inside to create the mouth parts.

Step 7: Draw a big, diamond-like shape on the top part of the big circle for the first part of the figeater's body. Use the construction lines inside the circle as guides to draw this shape. The top part of this shape should overlap the head a bit and the bottom should extend below the horizontal construction line.

Step 8: Darken the lower half of the initial guides to create the bottom half of the beetle's body. Add a line across the middle of the shape to divide the hard outer casing of the body called the elytra. Curve the top and bottom lines inward.

Step 9: Draw a couple of small, curved lines on the top sides and bottom of the main shape to finish the figeater's body. Use the angled lines at the top as guides to draw the front legs. Follow the path of the guides but make the shapes thicker. Draw lines inside the shapes to divide the legs into segments. Add a couple of small angled lines on the tip of each leg for tiny claws.

Step 10: Use the remaining lines on the sides as guides to draw the beetle' other legs. Follow the path of the initial guides as you draw the legs but make the shapes thicker. Add lines inside each shape to create segments. The top segments should be big and the bottom segments small. Add a few more small lines on the tips of each leg for the tiny claws.

Step 11: Go over the final lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. Don't ink the initial guide lines, only the final drawing. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing of a figeater beetle.

Final Step: Now color your beetle drawing! Use different shades of green to color the main part of the body. Use dark green to create shadows, regular green for mid-tones and yellow green and yellow for highlights. Add the colors lightly at first and gradually blend them together as you color darker and push down harder on your pencils. Use light and dark brown to color the antennae, the mouth parts and the outer edges of the body. If you'd like you can add more brown to the body to turn you drawing into a June bug or add stripes for a ten-lined June beetle. Add a few shadows under the legs and body using gray and a bit of blue or purple. Coloring can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. It's a good idea to use reference as you color for a more accurate depiction of a figeater beetle.
