For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Start by drawing two circles as guides for the jumping cat's body. To draw each circle, first make four marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circles, just trace the outer rim of circular objects like coins or bottle caps. Step 2: On the top, right side, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the cat's head. This circle should be about half the size of the body circle that's to the left. On the right side of the head circle, draw an angled line as a guide for the muzzle. This line should be similar to a small rectangle. On top of the head, draw a small, triangular shape as a guide for the ear.

Step 3: Under the circle in the middle, draw a long, angled line as a guide for the jumping cat's front leg. This line should bend on the left side and curve down on the right side. Under the circle on the left, draw another long angled line as a guide for the hind leg. Bend this line near the middle to indicate the joint.

Step 4: Connect the head to the body using a couple of short lines to create the guide for the cat's neck. Connect the body circles using curved, sloping lines to finish the guide for the torso. On the top, left side, draw a long, sloping line as a guide for the tail.

That's it for the guidelines! From this point on, press down harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a leaping cat.

Step 5: Inside the head, draw a small circle for the cat's eye. Place the eye on the right side of the head, close to the top edge of the muzzle. Make the left side of the eye pointy. Add a few lines on the lower, right side of the shape for the corners of the eye. Inside the eye draw a tiny circle for a highlight and a small, thick vertical line for the pupil. Shade in the pupil. On the tip of the muzzle, draw a triangular shape for the nose. Use curved lines on the bottom, left side of the shape for the nostril. Add a few more short strokes for fur.

Step 6: Under the nose, draw a line that curves to the left for the cat's mouth and another line under the mouth for the chin. Use short strokes to create a furry texture. Add a short line on top of the nose for the top part of the muzzle. Darken the triangular shape on top of the head for the ear. Add a few lines inside the shape for the ear's opening and structure. Use short stroke to create fur inside the ear.

Step 7: Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the furry shape of the cat's head. Make the top, right side of the head flatter than the initial circle and use short strokes as you darken the bottom. Draw a short angled line to the right of the ear for the ear that's on the other side of the head.

Step 8: Use the lines under the body as guides to draw the jumping cat's legs. First lightly sketch the shape of the legs around the guides. The tops of the legs should wide and the bottoms narrow; especially the hind leg. Extend the hind leg to emphasize the jump. Use short strokes for a furry texture. Make the tips of the feet curved. Inside each foot, draw a couple of short, curved lines to separate the toes.

Step 9: Darken the outer edges of the guides to finalize the shape of the cat's body. Don't overlap the shapes of the legs as you darken the underside of the body. Draw the tail around the guide line that's on the top, left side of the body. Use a series of short strokes as you follow the path of the guides for a furry texture. Draw the cat's legs that are on the other side of the the body to the right of the legs from the previous step. A big part of these legs will be hidden behind the first set of legs, so only draw the visible sections.

Step 10: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Shade your drawing for extra detail. For a white cat, use a medium value throughout the body to create some shadows. To add a pattern like this one, add a series of curved shapes across the body and shade them in using a medium value. Add a darker value inside the shapes to create stripes. Add a very light value to the white sections for a furry texture. If you have a pet cat, try to duplicate its coat pattern on your drawing. Shade lightly at first and gradually build up to darker values. For light values, push down very lightly on your pencil and push down harder for darker values. As you shade, use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Separate each stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates a more furry texture. It's a good idea to use reference as you shade for a more accurate depiction of a cat. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.
