For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Start by drawing two circles as guides for the rough collie dog's body. To draw each circle, first make four marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circles, just trace the outer rim of circular objects like coins or bottle caps. Don't draw them too far apart or the body will be too long.

Step 2: On the top, right side, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the rough collie's head. This circle should be about one-fifth the size of the body circle that's on the right. To the right of the head circle, draw a curved line as a guide for the muzzle. This line should be similar to an upside-down arc.

Step 3: Draw a sloping line across the entire head. This is a construction guide that will help you place the collie's facial features later on. On top of the head, draw two small arcs as guides for the ears. Under each body circle, draw an angled line as guides for the legs. Bend the lines to indicate where joints and feet will be. The line for the hind leg on the left should bend more in the middle than the line on the right for the front leg.

Step 4: Connect the head to the body using a couple of curved lines to create the guide for the rough collie's neck. The line on the left should be more curved than the line on the right. Connect the body circles using curved, horizontal lines to finish the guide for the torso. On the left side, draw a curved, vertical line as a guide for the tail.

That's it for the guidelines! From this point on, press down harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a rough collie dog.

Step 5: Inside the head, draw a small circle for the dog's eye. Use the sloping line as a guide to help you position the eye inside the head. The shape of the eye should be similar to a diamond. Inside the eye draw two small circles for the pupil and for a highlight. Shade in the pupil. Draw a few lines around the eye for fur. On the tip of the muzzle, draw a triangular shape as a guide for the nose. Use curved lines on the left side to create the nostril and short strokes at the top for a furry texture. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the shape right.

Step 6: Use the arcs on top of the head as guides to draw the collie's ears. Darken the arcs using a series of short strokes to create the fur around the ears. Curve the tops of the shapes so that the tips of the ears are folded down. Under the nose, draw a line that curves to the left for the mouth. Add a couple more lines along the path of the initial arc-like guide to create the rest of the muzzle.

Step 7: Darken the top edges of the initial guides using short stroke to create the furry top of the rough collie's head. Add a series of longer strokes along the left side of the head for the longer fur found there. Draw strokes above the eye for a bit more fur.

Step 8: Use the angled lines under the body as guides to draw the collie's legs. First lightly sketch the shape of the legs around the guides. The tops of the legs should wide and the bottoms narrow; especially the hind leg. Use short strokes for a furry texture. Make the tips of the feet curved. Inside each foot, draw a couple of short, curved lines to separate the toes.

Step 9: Draw the rough collie's legs that are on the other side of the the body to the right of the legs from the previous step. Use the initial legs as templates to draw these legs but make them slightly smaller and draw them a bit higher up. Add a couple of curved lines inside each foot for the toes.

Step 10: Darken the outer edges of the guides to finalize the shape of the dog's body. Use a long continuous line for the top part of the body. Use a series of strokes as you darken the underside of the body and chest for the longer fur. The longer you make the strokes, the shaggier the coat will be. Draw the tail around the vertical guide line that's on the left of the body. A big part of the tail will be hidden behind the hind leg. Add a few short strokes inside the body to emphasize the furry texture.

Step 11: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Shade your drawing for extra detail. Rough collies can have a variety of coat patterns. For this pattern, use a medium value all over the body except for the neck, chest and legs. Use a darker value on the nose, ears and on the fur that's on the left side of the head. Leave a strip along the front part of the forehead and muzzle blank for the white fur. Shade lightly at first and gradually build up to darker values. For light values, push down very lightly on your pencil and push down harder for darker values. As you shade the body, use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Use a lighter value on a sloping section of the body blank to create a highlight on the coat. As you shade, separate each stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates a more furry texture. Use light strokes on the white for to create a furry texture. Use a light value throughout the body for shadows. Add a cast shadow at the bottom using a medium value. It's a good idea to use reference as you shade for a more accurate depiction of a rough collie dog. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.
