For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Start by drawing circle as a guide for the red kangaroo's head. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a bottle cap. Step 2: Draw a long, horizontal line across the circle as a guide to help you place the kangaroo's facial features later. Curve the line so that it contours to the circle. Add a curved, vertical line that's closer to the right edge of the oval for another construction guide.

Step 3: On the bottom, right side, draw a long, curved line as a guide for the kangaroo's muzzle. This line should be similar to an upside-down arc. Make the arc wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. Pay attention to the size of this arc in relation to the circle.

Step 4: Inside the head, draw two small circles as guides for the kangaroo's eyes. Place the circles on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical line. The circle on the right should be smaller because the head is turned. Inside the muzzle, near the top, draw a small, triangular shape as a guide for the nose. On top of the head, draw two tall arcs as guides for the ears. Kangaroos have big ears, so don't make these arcs too small. Under the head draw two short lines as guides for the neck.

That's it for the guidelines! From this point on, press down harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a red kangaroo.

Step 5: Use the small circles inside the head as guides to draw the kangaroo's eyes. Darken the shapes but make the tops a bit shorter. Add a small, thin shape on top of teach eye for the eyelashes. Draw a short, curved line above the eyes for the eyelids.

Step 6: Inside the eyes, off to the sides, draw a few tiny circles for highlights. In the middle of each eye, draw a small circle and shade it in for the kangaroo's pupils. Don't overlap the tiny highlight circles as you shade the pupils. Add a few curved lines that are made up of short strokes around the eyes for fur.

Step 7: Darken the triangular shape inside the muzzle to create the kangaroo's nose. Make the corners pointier and draw a curved line at the bottom for the nostril. Under the nose, draw a line that curves to the left for the first part of the mouth. Use a series of short strokes along the left side of the mouth for fur. Darken the right edge of the initial arc for the rest of the mouth and muzzle. Draw a curved line under the mouth that's made up of short strokes for the chin.

Step 8: Darken the arc on the top, left side of the head to create the kangaroo's ear. Extend the shape of the ear into the head and make the tip pointier. Inside the shape, draw a series of curved lines and short strokes for the inner ear's structure and fur.

Step 9: Use the arc on the right side as guide to draw the kangaroo's other ear the same way. This ear is facing right, so draw the edge of the ear as a line across the middle of the arc. On the right side of that line, draw a series of short strokes for the fur inside the ear.

Step 10: Use the remaining shapes and lines as guides to draw the rest of the kangaroo's head. Draw a sloping line from the ear on the left to the eye on the right to create the top part of the head. Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the rest of the muzzle and jaw. Use a series of short strokes to darken the lines that make up the neck. Add a few more short strokes inside the head for a furry texture.

Step 11: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your red kangaroo drawing for extra detail. Use a medium value for the eyes but don't overlap the tiny highlight circles as you shade. Use a medium value all over the head but leave a few sections around the muzzle blank for the white fur. Shade lightly at first and gradually build up to darker values. For light values, push down very lightly on your pencil and push down harder for darker values. As you shade, use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. The strokes should basically radiate outward from the nose. Also, separate each stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates a more furry texture. Use a dark value for the nose and to create a striped pattern on the muzzle. Add a darker value to create shadows. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.
