Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw a short diagonal line for the top part of the cartoon shark's eye. Curve the tips of the line so that it looks more like a furrowed brow. Draw a curved line underneath for the bottom part of the eye.

 

Step 2: Inside the eye, near the top, draw a small dot for the pupil. Above the eye, draw a line that's somewhat parallel to the top of the eye to emphasize the shark's brow.

Step 3: Draw the front part of the shark's head by first drawing a sloping line to the right of the eye. Now angle the line back to the left side so that it looks similar to a greater-than sign (>). Now curve the line to the left side so that it forms the top part of the mouth. Notice how close the end of the line is to the eye. It should stretch farther left than the eye to give the shark a big mouth.

 

Step 4: Draw a long curved line underneath the line from the previous step for the bottom part of the shark's mouth. You can draw this line lower for an even bigger mouth! Add a short line on the right to connect the top and bottom.

 

 

Step 5: Draw a line on the right that's parallel to the mouth for the shark's bottom lip.

Step 6: Draw a couple of curved lines on the top left side of the mouth to emphasize the cartoon shark's grin. Add a short, curved line on top of the head, to the right of the eye, for the brow on the other side. Draw a small slit above the mouth, close to the tip of the nose, for the nostril.

 

Step 7: Draw the top row of teeth as small, triangle-like shapes lining the top edge of the mouth. Don't draw the shark's teeth too small, otherwise they'll look crowded. Leave enough room underneath for the bottom row.

Step 8: Draw the bottom row of teeth the same way, except this time the triangle-like shapes should point up.

 

Step 9: Draw the shark's tongue as a couple of curved lines between the teeth. Don't overlap the lines for the teeth. You can also skip this step if you don't have enough room between the teeth.

 

 

Step 10: To the left of the mouth, draw three short, curved vertical lines for the shark's gills.

Step 11: Below the gills, draw the shark's pectoral fin using a couple of long, curved lines. The basic shape of the fin should be similar to a thin, long, italic letter V that has a short line on the top left tip.

 

Step 12: To the left of the eye, draw a long, curved horizontal line as a continuation of the top of the head. Now add a long, curved line that connects the cartoon shark's lower lip to the pectoral fin for the lower part of the head.

Step 13: Now add the shark's dorsal fin by first drawing a long, curved, diagonal line at the top. Finish the shape of the dorsal fin by adding a curved vertical line on the left side.

 

Step 14: To the left of the dorsal fin, draw a long sloping line for the second half of the shark's body. Add another sloping line underneath that connects to the pectoral fin. The lines shouldn't meet on the left side. The end result should be similar to a long less-than sign (<). You can make this shape longer if you'd like.

 

 

Step 15: Draw the top part of the shark's tail the same way as the dorsal fin. Start with a long diagonal line. Then add the left edge of the tail as a long, curved vertical line. This shape should be longer and thinner than the dorsal fin.

Step 16: Add the lower part of the shark's tail the same way. The shape should be similar to the pectoral fin.

Step 17: Draw a small triangle- like shape on the top and bottom of the body for the shark's other fins.

 

Step 18: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your cartoon shark drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

 

 

Final Step: Color your cartoon shark drawing using color pencils, markers or even crayons! First use light blue to outline the color separation. Then color everything above that line light blue. Use light blue for the pectoral fin too. Add a bit of dark blue or black on the tip of every fin. Use light gray for the underside of the body. You can use regular gray, but don't push too hard on the pencil. Color the inside of the shark's mouth dark red and the tongue pink. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
