For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the pronghorn's body. First draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. The circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides.

If you're struggling drawing the circles, trace the outer rim of a coin, a lid or any other object with a circular edge. The circle on the left should be smaller. Don't draw these two circles too far apart, otherwise the pronghorn's torso will be too long.

 

Step 2: Draw another circle on the top, right side as a guide for the pronghorn's head. This circle should be about one- third the size of the first circle. Pay attention to the space between this circle and the first one.

 

Step 3: Draw an arc as the guide for the muzzle by first making a mark on the lower, right side of the pronghorn's head. Connect the mark to the head using curved lines to finish the shape of the arc.

 

Step 4: On top of the pronghorn's head, draw a short curved line as a guide for the first horn. Add another line on the right as a guide for the other horn. This line should curve more than the first.

 

Step 5: On the top, left side of the head, draw a small arc that comes to a point at the top as a guide for the pronghorn's ear.

Step 6: Draw two lines that connect the head to the body to form the guide for the pronghorn's neck. Now draw two longer lines that connect the first two circles to complete the guide for the body.

 

Step 7: Under the circle on the right, draw a long line that slopes to the right as a guide for the pronghorn's first front leg. Add another line to the left for the other leg. This line should slope the other way, and it should bend slightly.

 

Step 8: Draw a long diagonal line under the circle on the left as a guide for the first hind leg. This line should bend a bit in the middle and again at the bottom to indicate where the joints will be. Draw a long line to the right as a guide for the pronghorn's other hind leg. This line should bend at the middle.

 

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

 

Step 9: Lightly sketch the pronghorn's eye inside the head. The shape should be similar to a football. When you get the placement and size of the eye right, darken the lines. Add a line on top for the eyelid. Draw a couple of small lines inside for the eyeball and shade it in. Leave a small circle near the top of the eyeball blank to represent glare. Add a few more lines around the eye to represent the furry texture.

Step 10: Draw the pronghorn's nose inside the muzzle by first lightly sketching a small triangle. When you get the size and position of the nose right, darken the lines. Add a curved line at the bottom for the nostril. Use a wavy line for the top of the nose and add a small line at the bottom that splits the top lip.

 

Step 11: Draw a line under the nose that's made up quick, short strokes and stretches to the left for the mouth. Draw the other side of the mouth and follow the path of the initial arc to draw the shape of the muzzle. Darken a small section of the initial arc above the pronghorn's nose for that part of the muzzle. Follow the path of the guide as you draw the chin under the mouth. Use quick, short strokes for the furry texture.

 

Step 12: Use the left line on the head as a guide to draw the pronghorn's first horn. Lightly sketch a line on either side of the guide to determine the width of the horn. Add the base at the bottom using quick, short strokes. Darken the sides of the horn and make the left edge longer. Curve the line to the left and add a pointy tip at the end of the horn. Draw a second tip near the middle of the horn that points to the right for the second "prong."

 

Step 13: Draw the other horn using the line on the right as a guide. Draw the base using quick, short strokes, then follow the basic path of the guide upward. Curve the point to the left. Draw the right edge of the horn and add the second prong a little higher than halfway up. Add a few strokes within the shape of the horn for a rough texture.

 

Step 14: Darken the shape of the arc on the left side to create the pronghorn's ear. Add a few lines inside the shape for the fur. Add a short line between the horns for the other ear peeking out from behind. You can skip this ear if you don't have room.

Step 15: Use the remaining shapes and lines as guides to draw the rest of the pronghorn's head. Darken the outer edge of the top part of the guides to create the rest of the muzzle. Use quick, short strokes as you follow the guides at the bottom to create the lower jaw. Add a few strokes on the left side of the head for the hair found there.

 

Step 16: Use the line on the far right as a guide to draw the front leg that's on this side. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. When you get the shape of the pronghorn's leg right, darken the lines. Use quick, short strokes on the left side.

The shape of the leg should be wide at the top, and it should gradually get thinner toward the bottom. Bulge out the shape near the middle to indicate where the joints are on the leg. The pronghorn is walking, so the hooves should be pointing down. Add a few strokes inside the leg for the fur.

 

Step 17: Use the second line from the right as a guide to draw the pronghorn's other front leg the same way. Follow the basic path of the guide as you draw the shape of the leg around it. Bend the shape of the leg near the middle and add the hooves at the bottom.

 

Step 18: Use the line on the far left side as a guide to draw the first hind leg. Bend the leg near the middle and again close to the bottom to indicate the joints. The top part of the pronghorn's hind leg should be thicker than the top part of the front leg. Add some quick, short strokes for the fur.

 

Step 19: Use the last line under the body as a guide to draw the other hind leg the same way. Draw the pronghorn's hooves at the bottom. The top part of the leg will be hidden by the other leg, so don't worry about drawing it.

Step 20: Use the remaining lines as guides to draw the rest of the pronghorn's body. Use quick, short strokes along the back of the neck. Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the overall body shape. If you made your initial guides too thin or wide, correct them to give your pronghorn the proper body shape. Add a few quick, short strokes on the upper left side of the body for the furry rump and tail.

 

Step 21: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

 

Final Step: Add some shading to your pronghorn drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps ground the pronghorn so it doesn't appear to be floating.

Add even more value throughout your pronghorn drawing for extra detail on the coat pattern. Use a dark value for the horns and for a patch along the lower jaw. Use a medium value for the top of the head that gradually gets darker along the tip of the muzzle. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Leave a strip on the lower part of the face blank.

Use a medium value on the rest of the pronghorn's body except for a couple of stripes on the neck and chest, the tail and the underside. Use a darker value for the hooves too. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. You can also make the shadows darker to emphasize the structure. It's always a good idea to use reference as you draw. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
