Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw a short, horizontal line for the cartoon crocodile's (or alligator's) eyebrow. Curve the left tip down and the right tip up to emphasize the furrowed brow. Draw a curved line underneath for the bottom part of the eye.

 

Step 2: Inside eye, draw a circle for the iris and a dot in the middle of the circle for the crocodile's pupil.

 

Step 3: Draw a curved line over the eye for the thick, bony brow. Add a curved line on the right for the brow on the other side of the crocodile's head.

 

Step 4: Draw a sloping line on both sides of the brows for the top part of the crocodile's head.

 

Step 5: On the right, draw a small curved line and a big dot under it for the nostril. Now draw a big curved line similar in shape to a backward letter C for the tip of the crocodile's muzzle. Add another small curved line at the top for the other nostril.

Step 6: Draw a couple of curved lines toward the left for the top part of the cartoon crocodile / alligator's mouth.

 

Step 7: Draw a long, sloping line for the first part of the bottom of the crocodile's open mouth. Curve the line back up and draw another sloping line for the second part.

 

Step 8: Now draw a series of small triangle-like shapes along the top of the mouth for the crocodile's teeth. Add teeth to the bottom too.

 

Step 9: If you have room in the bottom part of the mouth, draw two curved lines for the crocodile's tongue.

 

Step 10: Draw a long wavy line under the mouth for the crocodile's lower jaw. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shape of the jaw right, darken the line.

Step 11: Draw a long, curved line to the left of the head for the top part of the body. The longer this line is, the longer the crocodile's body will be. Draw a shorter line under the jaw for the throat.

 

Step 12: Draw the first leg on the lower right side using a series of short curved lines. The right edge of the leg consists of two short, curved lines, while the left edge is one long, curved line. The bottom of the crocodile's foot is flat, and the toes are made up of three small shapes similar to greater-than signs (>).

 

Step 13: Draw the crocodile's front leg on the other side the same way but a bit smaller. The top part of this leg will be behind the body, so only draw the bottom half. To the left of the front legs, draw a long, curved horizontal line for the underside.

 

Step 14: Add the cartoon crocodile's hind leg on the left by first drawing a short curved line. Add two shorter curved lines on top of each other for the left edge of the hind leg. Now draw three short V-shaped lines at the bottom for the toes.

 

Step 15: Continue drawing the line for the back toward the left to create the top part of the crocodile's tail. Add another long line at the bottom to finish up the shape of the tail. Make sure the tail comes to a point on the left side. You can also make the tail longer if you'd like.

Step 16: Draw a series of short, triangle-like shapes across the back and tail for the crocodile's spiky skin. Add another row of spikes inside the body, near the top. You can also add a third row below that if you'd like.

 

Step 17: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your cartoon crocodile / alligator drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

 

Final Step: Color your cartoon crocodile / alligator drawing using color pencils, markers or even crayons! Color the top half of the body and the legs yellow-green. Use yellow for the bottom half of the body. You can color your crocodile drawing differently if you'd like. Use brown for the inside of the mouth, pink for the tongue and green for the eye. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
