To draw an Ice Dragon step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.
The Written step-by-step video tutorial:
For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw a circle on the right side of the paper as a guide for the front part of the ice dragon's body. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, trace the outer rim of a bottle cap, a lid or any other object with a circular edge. Step 2: On the left side, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the back of the body. This circle should be about half the size of the first one. The farther apart they are, the longer the ice dragon's body will be.
Step 3: Draw another circle on the top, right side as a guide for the ice dragon's head. This circle should be about one-fourth the size of the first circle. Place this circle pretty high up so that the dragon ends up with a long neck.
Step 4: On the right side of the ice dragon's head, draw a small arc as a guide for the muzzle. The bigger you draw this arc, the bigger the muzzle will be. Make it slope down a bit too.
Step 5: Under the big circle on the right, draw an angled line as a guide for the first front leg. The line should bend near the middle to indicate the joint and at the bottom for the foot. Draw a shorter, angled line to the right as a guide for the ice dragon's other front leg.
Step 6: Draw another angled line under the circle on the left as a guide for the first hind leg. This line should bend twice in the middle for the joints and once at the bottom for the ice dragon's foot. Add another angled line to the right as a guide for the other hind leg.
Step 7: Draw two curved lines to connect the head to the body and form the guide for the neck. The line on the left should curve a lot at the top. Use two lines to connect the first two circles together and form the rest of the ice dragon's body.
Step 8: Draw a long, curved line that starts on the top, left side for the first part of the ice dragon's tail. The line should curve, and the end of it should be under the guide for the hind legs. Sketch the line lightly so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. Draw another curved line that starts closer to the hind legs to complete the shape of the dragon's tail. The two lines should meet under the hind legs to form a pointy tip.
Step 9: At the top of the very first circle, draw a long, angled line for the first part of the wing. At the top of this line, draw another long line that curves to the left for the top of the wing. The longer you make these lines, the bigger the ice dragon's wings will be. Add another long, curved line in the middle to finish the guide for the wing.
That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.
Step 10: Lightly sketch a small oval inside the head, near the middle, for the eye. When you get the size and shape right, draw a curved line at the top for the ice dragon's brow. Darken the bottom part of the eye so that its shape is similar to a diamond. Above the eye, draw three pointy, triangle-like shapes for the thick, spiky brow. Draw another set of pointy spikes on the right for the brow on the other side of the head.
Step 11: Darken the top part of the arc and add a pointy shape along the edge for the ice dragon's nose. On the inside, below the eye and to the right, draw a small line for the nostril. Now draw a line that extends toward the eye and that has a pointy spike above the nostril.
Step 12: At the front of the mouth, draw a series of spiky lines for the ice dragon's teeth. The front part of the teeth should be similar to the letter M. Add more spiky teeth on the left side but follow the overall shape of the muzzle. Draw a sloping line that stretches to the left to make the mouth longer. On the far left side, draw more spiky shapes for the rest of the dragon's teeth.
Step 13: Below the front teeth, draw a small diamond for a spike on the chin. Darken the rest of the initial arc to create the ice dragon's lower jaw. Darken the line above the eyes to create the top part of the head. Along that line, draw a series of triangles for more spikes. Don't make these spikes too big. Leave room on the sides for the dragon's horns.
Step 14: Add the big horns on the ice dragon's head by first drawing a curved line to the left of the eye for the base. Now draw a long, wavy line that almost touches the tip of the wing on the top left. Draw another wavy line at the bottom that completes the cone- like shape of the dragon's horn. Draw the horn on the other side the same way. The tip of this horn should point the opposite way. The bottom of this horn will not be visible. Don't overlap the spikes as you draw it.
Step 15: Under the horn on the left, draw a big diamond-like shape for another horn/ spike along the jaw. Add another spike under that to give the ice dragon more armor. Add one more diamond-like shape at the bottom for the last spike.
Step 16: Darken the initial lines that connect the head to the body to create the ice dragon's neck. Draw a series of small, triangle-like shapes along the left edge for the spikes on the neck. Draw a long, vertical line under the head and in the middle of the neck, for the separation of the dragon's scales. On the right side of the neck, draw a series of short, horizontal lines for the plate armor.
Step 17: Use the second line from the right as a guide to draw the ice dragon's first front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. Use curved lines as you draw the shape of the leg to emphasize the muscle structure. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. On the left side, at the elbow joint, draw a small, diamond-like shape for a spike. At the bottom, along the guide, draw three small triangular shapes for the dragon's claws.
Step 18: Draw the ice dragon's other front leg on the right side the same way. Draw the shape of the leg around the guide. Use curved lines for the muscles. At the bottom, on the right, draw a few small, triangular shapes for the claws. Add a couple of short, curved lines over the claws to create the dragon's toes.
Step 19: Darken the lower, right edge of the very first circle to create the ice dragon's chest. At the top of the chest, draw a triangle for the first armor plate. Below the triangle, draw long, curved vertical line to split the chest in two. Now draw a series of lines on either side that slope toward the middle to finish the plates of armor.
Step 20: Use the angled line to the left of the neck as a guide to draw the first part of the ice dragon's wing. Follow the basic path of the line but make the shape thicker. At the top of the guide, draw a triangular shape for another spike. Continue to make the shape thicker. On the left side, where the joint is, draw another small triangle for another spike. Draw a curved, vertical line on the right side for a bit of the ice dragon's skin on the wing.
Step 21: Darken the long, curved lines on the left for the rest of the dragon's first wing. At the end of each line, draw a small triangle- like shape for spikes. In between the two spikes, draw a third spike. Keep the spacing between the spikes equal. Connect the spikes using curved lines to form the edge of the ice dragon's wing.
Step 22: Inside the wing, draw a line from the joint to the middle spike for extra detail. Draw the inner, bottom edge of the wing using a couple of curved lines. Add a spike here too and draw a line inside the shape for more detail on the inner wing. Using a few curved lines, draw the visible portion of the ice dragon's other wing above the head. Draw a spike at the tip of this wing too. Don't overlap the shapes on the head.
Step 23: Use the angled line on the far left side as a guide to draw the ice dragon's first hind leg. Lightly sketch the leg around the guide. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. The bottom part of the leg bends backward, so the top shape should overlap the middle section a bit. Just like with the front legs, draw three small, triangular shapes at the bottom for the claws. Add the dragon's toes as short, curved lines above the claws and connect them to the rest of the leg.
Step 24: Use the last line under the body as a guide to draw the other hind leg. Draw the shape of the leg around the guide line. The top part of the ice dragon's leg isn't visible from this angle. Draw the triangle- like claws on the right tip of the foot.
Step 25: Darken the curved lines on the left side to create the shape of the tail. At the tip of the ice dragon's tail, draw a couple of small, triangular shapes for an arrow-like spike.
Step 26: Draw a series of small, triangular shapes along the top of the body for the spikes on the back. As you get to the curved section of the dragon's tail, start placing the spikes inside and making them thinner. As you get closer to the tip of the tail, place the spikes back at the top and make them bigger. Using a series of short lines, draw the remaining scales along the underside of the ice dragon's body.
Step 27: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your ice dragon drawing! Use blue as the base for the dragon's body. Color lightly at first. Gradually make your color darker by pushing harder on your pencil. If you don't want an ice dragon, you can color your drawing any other color! Use a bit of dark blue throughout the body to create some shadows and give the figure more volume. Now use light blue for the plate armor at the bottom and the inner wing. Using dark blue, draw a few lines along the side of the dragon's armor to make it reflective. Use mainly light blue with a bit of dark blue for the remaining spikes and horns. Use lines and streaks inside the shapes to give them an icicle- like appearance.
Draw a shadow at the bottom using gray and blue so that the dragon doesn't appear to be floating. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
