To draw this Bulldog step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the bulldog's head. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine its height and width. Space out the marks equally. Then connect the marks using curved lines. With every step, sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a bowl or a lid. Step 2: Draw a long, curved, horizontal line across the circle as a guide to help you place the bulldog's facial features later. Draw this line slightly higher than the middle. Add a curved, vertical line on top, left for another guide.

Step 3: Draw a small oval as a guide for the bulldog's nose where the construction guide lines meet.

Step 4: Inside the head, on the left side, draw another circle as a guide for the dog's muzzle. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle. Use the construction lines as guides for its placement. The bulldog's nose should be inside this circle close to its top edge. The lower, left side edge of this circle should touch the edge of the main head circle.

Step 5: To the right of the muzzle, just above the horizontal guide, draw a small circle as a guide for the bulldog's first eye. To the left of the muzzle, draw a small half-circle as a guide for the other eye that will be hiding behind the dog's muzzle.

Step 6: On the top, right side of the head, draw a long, angular line as a guide for the first ear. The bottom of this line should end at the tip of the horizontal line. Add an extra line curving up for the folded tip of the bulldog's ear.

Step 7: On the top, left side of the head, draw a similar shape as guide for the bulldog's other ear.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 8: Use the small oval inside the muzzle as a guide to draw the nose. Darken the top edge of the oval for the first part of the bulldog's nose. When you darken the sides of the shape, curve the lines inward to create the nostrils. Make the bottom part of the nose narrower than the initial oval. Draw a couple of lines between the nostrils to give the dog's nose more detail.

Step 9: Below the nose, draw a big, curved line for the first part of the dog's mouth. The bottom tips of this line should touch the edges of the initial circle for the muzzle. Make the top part narrow and the bottom part wide. The shape should be similar to an upside-down letter U. On the lower, left side of the head, draw a long, vertical line that curves at the bottom for the jowls. Extend the right tip of the bulldog's mouth down to the bottom edge of the head and then curve it back up for the rest of the jowls.

Step 10: Darken the top part of the muzzle circle for the skin fold on top of the nose. Extend the right tip of the line to the bottom, right side of the head toward the droopy jowl. Extend the left tip of the skin fold down to the curved line on the lower, left side for the other jowl. On the right side of the nose, draw a line that curves downward for another crease on the muzzle. Draw a smaller line on the left side of the nose for another wrinkle. Add shorter lines below the nose too.

Step 11: Extend the left side of the line for the mouth down toward the jowl to close off the shape. Connect the left jowl to the right jowl using a wavy line to create the chin. Add a few curved lines between the bulldog's jowls for the creases on the chin. Use the initial muzzle circle as a guide to draw the small wrinkles on the chin.

Step 12: Draw a curved line across the top of the eye on the right to create the bulldog's droopy eyelid. Extend the sides of the line to create the corners of the eye and darken the bottom edge of the initial circle. Add a curved line on the bottom for a droopier eye. Do the same thing for the eye on the left but don't overlap the fold.

Step 13: Inside each eye, off to the side, draw a tiny circle for highlight. Darken the edges of the original circles but don't overlap the bulldog's droopy eyelids. Inside each eye, near the top, draw a small circle for the pupils. Don't overlap the highlight circles. Shade in the circles for pupils, leaving the highlights blank.

Step 14: Use the angled line on the upper, right side of the head as a guide to draw the bulldog's first ear. Follow the path of the guide but make the shape curvier as you darken the line. Draw a series of short strokes along the left side of the shape for the furry base of the ear. Add a few longer lines to the left of the shape for the ear's inner structure.

Step 15: Use the angled line on the top, left side of the bulldog's head as a guide to draw the other ear the same way. Darken the angled line but make the shape curvier. Add a few short strokes and lines for the fur and structure.

Step 16: Use the big circle as a guide to draw the rest of the head. Darken the top edge but make it a bit flatter. Follow the path of the initial circle but make the left side wavier for the structure around the eye. The line for the head below the eye should be narrower than the original circle. Draw a few curved lines to the right of the jowls for a bit of structure on the bulldog's jaw. Draw more curved lines along the lower edge of the initial circle for the loose skin on the dog's neck.

Step 17: Draw a series of short strokes and curved lines within the shape for more detail on the head. Using a series of short strokes, draw a curved line over each eye for the dog's brows. Add a few more short strokes below the eye on the right for the bone structure. Add longer curved lines above the eyes for the loose skin on the head. These curved lines also give the bulldog more expression and character.

Step 18: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Using a medium value, add some shadows to give the bulldog's head more dimension and volume. Use a darker value in certain areas like inside the ears for deeper shadows. Shade the nose but leave a strip blank near the top for highlight. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Shade the inside of the bulldog's eyes using a medium value but don't overlap the tiny highlight circles. For a more detailed guide on how to shade, check out this tutorial: How to shade.

You can stop here for a white bulldog or continue to add value to give the coat a pattern. For this pattern, create an irregular shape under the nose and around the eye and shade it in. Add smaller spots on the muzzle too. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for a more accurate depiction of a bulldog. If you have a pet bulldog or a similar dog breed, try to duplicate its fur on your drawing. Add a bit of light value to emphasize the white fur. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
