Written step-by-step video tutorial:
For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a curved line similar to a half-circle for the cartoon T. rex's eye. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. When you get the shape right, darken the line and make it thick for eyelashes. The shape should be like a circle that doesn't connect at the bottom.

Step 2: Inside the eye, near the right side, lightly sketch a small circle for the iris. When you get the size and position of the iris right, darken the line. In the middle of the iris, draw a tiny circle and shade it in for the pupil. Draw a couple of highlights as tiny circles above and below the cartoon dinosaur's pupil. Don't shade these in.

Step 3: On the lower, left side of the eye, draw a sloping, curved line for the mouth. On the right end of the T. rex's mouth, draw a tiny, curved line for a smile line. From the left end of the mouth, draw a curved line upward for the front part of the muzzle. From the top of this line, draw a short line that slopes to the top, right for the rest of the muzzle.

Step 4: Continue the line for the muzzle and stretch it to the right for the top of the cartoon dinosaur's head. Pay attention to the distance from the eye to the top of the head. Curve the line downward for the rest of the head. Curve the bottom of this line to the left a bit. The shape of the T. rex's head should be somewhat blocky.

Step 5: Under the mouth, draw a short, curved line for the chin. Inside the dinosaur's muzzle, near the top, draw a tiny curved line for the nose. Below the tiny curved line, draw a tiny circle for the nostril. Above the T. rex's eye, draw a short, curved line for the thick brow.

Step 6: Under the chin, draw a short, vertical line for the top part of the body. Below that, draw the pointy digits as two small, angled lines that are similar to the letter V on its side. Curve the shapes of the digits. Add a curved line at the top for the cartoon Tyrannosaurus rex's bent short arm. At the bottom, draw a slightly longer curved line for the lower edge of the short arm.

Step 7: Below the arm, draw a line that curves to the right for the bottom part of the cartoon dinosaur's body. On the left side of the body, draw two more short, angled lines for the digits of the other arm peeking from behind.

Step 8: To the right, draw a long, curved, vertical line for the first part of the dinosaur's leg. Farther to the right, draw a slightly shorter vertical line that curves the other way for the other edge of the leg. Below the curved lines, draw two more lines that slope to the lower, left side for the bottom of the T. rex's leg. At the bottom, draw three short, angled lines for the pointy toes. The lines should be similar the letter V on its side.

Step 9: To the left, below the body, draw the other leg the same way. From this angle, only the bottom half of the T. rex's leg and toes will be visible.

Step 10: From the leg, draw a long line that slopes up to the top, right side for the bottom edge of the tail. Draw a wavy, horizontal line from this end all the way to the head for the rest of the cartoon dinosaur's tail and body. This line should dip on the left for the neck, curve up in the middle for the body and be flat on the right for the tail.

Step 11: Go over the lines with a pen or marker to make your cartoon Tyrannosaurus rex drawing permanent. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

Final Step: Color your cartoon dinosaur drawing any way you'd like, using color pencils markers or crayons! For this look, draw thin, curved shapes using dark green on the head, body and leg for stripes. Using light green, draw an outline below the eye, and on the bottom of the head and body. Color the inside. Use yellow for the lower half of the T. rex's head, body and tail. Use dark and light brown for the eye. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
