The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the Gouldian finch's head. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: Inside, draw two intersecting lines that divide the circle evenly as guides to help you place the Gouldian finch's facial features later.

Step 3: On the left side of the bird's head, draw a small, angled line that's similar to a less-than sign (<) as a guide for the Gouldian finch's beak.

Step 4: Under the head, draw a big circle as a guide for the top part of the Gouldian finch's body. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle too. Draw the circle off to the right of the head a bit. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the bird's head. Don't overlap the edges of the circles at the top.

Step 5: Make a small mark on the lower, right side for the first part of the guide for the lower part of the bird's body. Connect the mark to the big circle using long, curved lines to create a big arc. The height of this arc should be about the same as the diameter of the big circle.

Step 6: On the lower, right side of the body, draw a long, pointy, triangular shape as a guide for the Gouldian finch's tail.

Step 7: Under the body, draw two long lines that curve downward as guides for the Gouldian finch's feet.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a Gouldian finch.

Step 8: Inside the head, draw a small circle for the eye. Use the initial lines as guides to place the bird's eye. Draw a few curved lines around the eye for the bare skin and eyelid. Inside the Gouldian finch's eye, draw a tiny circle off to the side for a highlight and a bigger circle in the middle for the pupil.

Step 9: Darken the top part of the angled line on the left for the first part of the finch's beak. Make the line curvier. Draw a short line across the middle of the shape for the mouth. Darken the bottom part of the initial guide for the lower half of the beak. Add another short line at the bottom that extends the beak inside the bird's head. Draw a series of short strokes along the right side of the beak for the feathery base.

Step 10: Darken the top edge of the initial circle for the first part of the head. On the right side, draw a long, sloping line that connects to the body for the back of the Gouldian finch's head and neck. Under the beak, draw a short, curved line along the path of the initial circle for the rest of the head.

Step 11: Darken the right side of the guides in the middle for the first part of the Gouldian finch's folded wing. Lightly sketch a long, diagonal line inside the body for the inner edge of the folded wing. When you get the shape of the bird's wing right, darken the line. Make the line curvier. Add short strokes at the top and long lines at the bottom for the feathers.

Step 12: Use the sloping line under the body, on the right side, as a guide to draw the bird's first leg. Follow the path of the guide and draw the shape of the leg around it. Make the tip pointy for the nail. Make the line curvier at the bottom for the toe. Add an extra curved line on the left side for the other toe. On the right side, draw a small, curved shape that's pointy at the bottom for the toe that's on this side of the finch's foot. Make the shape of the leg thin. At the top, draw a series of short strokes for the feathery base.

Step 13: Draw the shape of the Gouldian finch's other leg, foot and toes around the guide on the left. Add the toe on the right side and another short, curved shape behind it for the toe that points backward. The toe in the middle should be the biggest and longest. Add a curved line on the left for the toe on the other side.

Step 14: Use the shapes in the middle as guides to draw the rest of the body. Darken the outer edges of the guides to create the shape of the Gouldian finch's body. Don't overlap the leg on the right.

Step 15: Darken the thin shape on the lower, right side for the tail. Make the bottom edge wavier. The base of the bird's tail should be wide. Add a wavy line inside for feathers.

Step 16: Draw a curved line that's made up of short strokes inside the head for the pattern on the feathers. Draw a second curved line on the left side of the neck for more of the pattern. Draw a long, wavy, curved line across the chest to finish with the Gouldian finch's feather pattern.

Step 17: Draw two sloping lines under the feet for a branch. Don't overlap the bird's feet as you draw the branch. On the right, draw a circle that's made up of jagged lines for the end of the branch.

Step 18: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing of a Gouldian finch.

Final Step: Color your Gouldian finch drawing! Use a mixture of light brown, dark brown and peach to color the beak. Use dark brown and black for the bird's eye. Don't overlap the tiny highlight circle as you color. Use black for the throat and along the edge of the pattern on the head. Blend dark brown, brown, red and red-orange for the head. Use dark colors at the bottom and light ones at the top. Color lightly at first and slowly blend the colors and build up the level of darkness.

Use a mixture of light blue and dark blue for the section to the right of the black band. Use a mixture of dark green and light green for the back and the folded wing. Use dark blue and light blue for the top part of the tail. Use dark green along the lower edge of the bird's wing. Gouldian finches have a variety of color patterns, so you can color your bird differently if you'd like.

Use dark blue and violet for the lower part of the chest and light purple and pink for the top part. Blend the colors slowly. Coloring like this can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Use orange, yellow-orange, yellow and brown to color the lower half of the bird's body. Use light brown and yellow-orange along the bottom edge of the body for shadows. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for a more accurate depiction of a Gouldian finch.

Use light gray for the shadows on the tail and dark brown for the shadows on the feet and branch. Use peach for the main part of the feet. Use streaks of light brown and dark brown for the branch. If you have a pet Gouldian finch or a similar variety, try to duplicate its color pattern on your drawing. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
