To draw this Beluga Whale step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the right side of the paper as a guide for the front part of the beluga whale's body. To draw the circle, make four marks to determine height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: To the left, draw another circle the same way as a guide for the back portion of the body. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle too. The two circles should be similar in size. Space the circles apart. If you draw them too close together, the beluga whale's body will be too short.

Step 3: To the right of the first circle, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the beluga whale's head. Place this circle closer to the first circle. This circle should be about one-third the size of the first circle.

Step 4: Draw a series of curved lines that connect the circles to form the rest of the guide for the body. Connect the circles on the right using short, wavy lines to complete the front part of the beluga whale's body. Use longer curved lines to connect the circles in the middle and finish the guide for the torso.

Step 5: To the left, draw two long lines that come to a point as a guide for the tail portion of the body. Pay attention to the length of these lines in relation to the rest of the beluga whale's body. Don't draw them too long.

Step 6: Below the first circle, draw a small, V-shaped line as a guide for the beluga whale's flipper. On the left side of the body, draw a small, triangular shape as a guide for the tail fluke.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 7: Inside the head, close to the left edge, draw a very small oval for the beluga whale's eye. Inside the eye, draw a tiny circle and shade it in for the iris. Don't worry too much about the detail, as the eye is too small for it. Draw a few short, curved lines around the eye for some wrinkles and skin creases. Draw a few more short lines higher above the eye to emphasize the structure of the thick brow.

Step 8: Near the bottom of the head, draw a wavy, horizontal line for the mouth. The beluga whale's mouth should be close to the eye on the left side, and the right side should stick out of the circle a bit. Below the right tip of the mouth, draw a short, curved line for the beluga whale's lower jaw. Above the mouth, draw a slightly longer curved line for the upper jaw.

Step 9: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the head. Draw the top, right side of the head farther away from the circle for beluga's distinct bulbous head. Darken the top edge of the circle and the guide on the left side. When you darken the bottom of the head, draw the line inside of the initial circle for a skinnier shape. Draw a few short lines near the middle of the head to emphasize the structure of the mouth.

Step 10: Darken the V-shaped line under the body for the beluga whale's flipper. Make the shape rounder and wider. Stretch the tops of the lines inside the body to make the flipper longer. Don't connect the lines at the top. To the left draw a smaller, V-shaped line for the tip of the flipper that's on the other side of the body.

Step 11: Use the triangular shape on the left side as a guide to draw the beluga whale's tail flukes. Follow the left edge of the guide but make the shape wavier as you darken the lines. Make the bottom and top edge of the guide rounder than the initial shape.

Step 12: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the beluga whale's body. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the body. As you darken the top edge, draw the line a bit farther from the guide to create the very short dorsal fin. The dorsal fin should barely be noticeable. Make it short, wide and curved at the top. Use a wavy line to darken the bottom edge. Don't overlap the flipper that's on this side of the beluga's body.

Step 13: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Beluga whales are white, but you can lightly add some value throughout the body for shadows. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Use a slightly darker value along the edges and a very light value in the middle. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Add the value lightly at first, and then gradually build up to the level of darkness that you want for the shadows. Add some shadows on the left side for the curves and muscle structure of the body. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for an accurate depiction of a beluga whale. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
