To draw this Flying Dragon step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the bottom of the paper as a guide for the front part of the dragon's body. To draw the circle, make four marks to determine height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. To the right draw a slightly smaller circle as a guide for the back portion of the body. Leave a space between the circles so that the body isn't too short. Step 2: On the far lower, left side, draw an even smaller circle as a guide for the head. This circle should be about one-fourth the size of the first one. The farther away it is, the longer the neck will be. On the left side of the head, make a small mark for the first part of the guide for the dragon's muzzle. Connect the mark to the head using curved lines to create a U-shaped arc as a guide for the muzzle.

Step 3: Connect the circles using a series of curved lines to complete the guide for the dragon's body. Use two long, sloping lines to connect the circles on the left and form the guide for the neck. Use shorter lines to connect the first two circles and complete the guide for the torso.

Step 4: On the lower, right side of the dragon's body, draw a long, curved line for the first part of the guide for the tail. The line should slope down and then curve up on the right. Sketch lightly at first. Draw a second line at the top to make the shape of the tail thicker. The tail should be thick at the base and gradually get thinner toward the pointy tip on the right.

Step 5: Starting inside the first circle, draw a short, angled line as a guide for the arm. The shape of this line should be similar to the number 7 with a curved bottom. Below the circle on the right, draw a short, zigzag line as a guide for the dragon's hind leg.

Step 6: On top of the first circle, draw two long, curved lines as guides for the wings. The first lines should curve to the top, right side, and it should angle a bit near the middle. Pay attention to the length of these lines in relation to the dragon's body. The longer the lines, the bigger the wings. The second line should curve to the top, left side. Bend the middle section a bit. The second line should be a little smaller than the first line.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 7: Inside the head, near the middle, lightly sketch a small triangle for the eye. Don't make the dragon's eye too big. When you get the size and position right, darken the shape. Draw a curved line over the eye for the lower edge of the thick brow. Draw a series of small, pointy shapes above the eye for the thick, spiky brow.

Step 8: Draw a curved spike at the tip of the initial arc for the front part of the muzzle. Lightly sketch a long, jagged line across the bottom for the arc for the mouth. Draw the line for the mouth as far right as the eye. Use jagged shapes of different sizes for the teeth. When you get the shape of the mouth and teeth right, darken the line. Dragons are mythical creatures, so you can add as many or as few teeth as you like. On the top part of the muzzle, draw a couple of tiny, curved lines for the nostrils.

Step 9: Darken the top part of the initial arc to complete the top of the muzzle. Draw a series of jagged lines along the top edge of the circle for the spiky brow on the other side. Darken the lower edge of the guides and curve the far right side up for the strong jaw.

Step 10: On the top part of the dragon's head, lightly sketch a couple of curved lines for the first horn. Make the bottom of the horn thick and the top pointy. Darken the lines when you get the shape right. Make the lines wavy. You can make the horns as big or as small as you want. Below the first horn, draw the other horn using a couple more long, curved lines. This horn should be slightly bigger than the first one. Make the bottom part thick and the top pointy.

Step 11: Draw a series of small, triangular shapes along the top for the spikes on the dragon's head and neck. On the right side of the jaw, draw two big, cone-like shapes for more spikes. You can skip these spikes if you want.

Step 12: Use the angled line under the dragon's body, on the left, as a guide to draw the first arm. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the arm around it. Use short, curved lines around the guide at the top to emphasize the muscle structure. The forearm should tuck into the top arm a bit. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Add a pointy spike at the elbow. Make the bottom part of the shape thinner for the wrist. On the bottom, right side, draw a couple of small, pointy shapes for the digits that are folded back.

Step 13: Use the angled line on the right as a guide to draw the dragon's hind leg in a similar way. Lightly sketch the thick shape of the leg around the guide. Make the top part wide and the bottom narrower. The top part of the leg should be similar to a curved letter V. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. The bottom half of the dragon's leg should be tucked behind the top half. Make the bottom half thinner. Curve the shape at the bottom and add a couple of spiky lines on the right for the digits pointing back.

Step 14: Use the long, angled line on the top, right side of the dragon's body as a guide to draw the first wing. Darken the lower half of the guide and add a second line to the right to make the shape thicker. Make the bottom part slightly thicker. Add a small, triangular shape where the line bends for a spike. Darken the top half of the guide and add another line to make the shape thicker. Keep this shape thin overall. The top part should be especially thin and pointy.

Starting where the shape bends, draw a long line that curves up for the digit-like structure of the dragon's wing. Below that, draw another long, curved line but make it more horizontal for another digit-like structure. Below, draw another long, curved, digit-like line that slopes downward a bit. Pay attention to the lengths of these lines. At the bottom draw a shorter line that slopes down.

Step 15: Draw another line next to each digit-like structure on the wing to make the shapes thicker. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shapes right, darken the lines. Keep the shapes thin. The tips should especially be thin and pointy. All of these lines should come together in the middle where the wing bends. Connect the tips of the digit-like limbs using curved lines for the skin on the wing. The lines at the bottom should be longer. The bottom-most line should connect to the top part of the dragon's body.

Step 16: Use the initial lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the body. Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the dragon's body. Don't overlap the shape of the wing, arm or leg as you darken the lines. Draw a line along the lower edge of the body for the scales. Don't overlap the arm and leg.

Step 17: Under the body, to the left of the arm, draw the bottom part of the other arm. Use the dragon's first arm as a template. Only the hand and digits will be visible. Draw the other leg the same way. Use the first leg as a template to draw the visible portions of the other leg to the left.

Step 18: Draw a series of short, vertical lines across the bottom of the body for the scales. Don't draw the lines too close together; spread them out. Don't overlap the limbs as you draw the dragon's scales. On the tip of the tail, draw a small, arrow-like shape for a spike. Draw a series of small, triangular shapes along the top edge of the dragon's body for more spikes. Don't overlap the wing as you draw the spikes. Make the spikes smaller the closer they are to the tip of the tail.

Step 19: Darken the long line on the top, left side for the dragon's other wing. Add a triangular shape in the middle for a spike. Draw a couple of lines to the right to make the shape thicker. Don't connect these lines.

Step 20: Draw a series of long, curved lines on the top and right side of the outer edge of the wing. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shapes right, darken the lines. Use the wing on the right as a template for what this wing should look like. The bottom should be thinner. Draw a few lines from outer edges of the wing to the bent area in the middle for the dragon's digit-like limbs on the other side. The digit-like limbs are on the other side, so don't connect the lines. This side of the wing is the skin cover.

Step 21: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing of a flying dragon.

Final Step: Color your drawing! Dragons are mythical, so you can color your drawing any way you'd like. For this look, use dark brown for the spikes, horns and digit-like limbs on the wings. Add some shadows by lightly using dark brown all over to give the body more dimension and volume. Use light brown to color the scales on the underside of the body and the inside of the wing on the right. Mix red and brown to color the rest of the dragon's body. Color lightly at first and then slowly add more pressure to your pencil and blend the colors together. Coloring can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. Use dark brown to emphasize the shadows on the dragon's body. Add some squiggly lines on the wing on the right for veins.
