For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Start by drawing a circle as a guide for the front part of the bumblebee's body also called the thorax. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a cup or a lid. Step 2: To the right, draw a small, oval-like shape as a guide for the bee's head. The left side of the this oval will be pushed up against the big circle, so don't overlap the edges. Pay attention to the size of this oval in relation to the big circle.

Step 3: To the left of the big circle, draw a big curved shape as a guide for the back portion of the bumblebee's body called the abdomen. The shape of this guide should be similar to a big arc on its side. Make the top edge curved and the bottom edge more flat. The shape should slope down on the lower, left side. Pay attention to how big this shape is.

Step 4: Draw the long, angled lines along the bottom edge of the big circle as guides for the bumblebee's legs. Draw these line going up and then angle them back down and to the left. Pay attention to how these lines bend as this will determine where the joints on the legs will be. The lengths of the lines should increase the farther to the left they are.

Step 5: On top of the body, draw a long, curved shape as a guide for the bee's wing. This guide should be similar to a thin arc that's slightly tilted. Close off the shape of the arc at the bottom using a shorter, horizontal line. Pay attention to the size of this guide in relation to the rest of the body.

Step 6: Draw a long, thin oval inside the head for the bumblebee's eye. The oval should take up a big space inside the head. Sketch lightly at first and when you get the shape and placement right, darken the lines.

Step 7: On the top, right side of the head, draw two long, thin, angled shapes for the bee's antennae. Bend the shapes near the bottom to create a segment. Don't draw the shapes too thick. Bumblebees' antennae are pretty short, so don't draw the shapes too long.

Step 8: Use the small, oval-like shape as a guide to draw the bumblebee's head. Draw a series of short strokes along the basic path of the oval to create the shape of the fury head. Make the top part of the head taller than the initial oval. At the bottom, draw a the mouth parts using a few short, angled lines.

Step 9: Use the angled line that's under the body on the right-most side as a guide to draw the bee's first leg. First lightly sketch the shape of the leg around the guide line. Draw the right part of the leg first and break up the shape into small rectangular segments. Draw three segments in total and make them smaller the farther down they are. At the very bottom, draw a couple of small, angled lines to create a claw. When you get the shape of the leg right, darken the lines. On the top, left side, draw the base of the leg using a couple of sloping lines. Add a few short strokes on the base of the leg for hair.

Step 10: Use the angled line to the left as guide to draw the bumblebee's middle leg the same way. Draw the shape of the leg around the guide line. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the leg's shape right. Break up the shape of the leg into smaller, rectangular segments. The segments should be big at the top and gradually get smaller toward the bottom. Draw this leg bigger than the front leg. Draw a series of short strokes along the left edges of the segments at the top for the hair found on the legs. On the left side, draw the base of the leg using a few sloping lines.

Step 11: Draw the bee's last leg using the long line on the left as a guide. Just like before, draw the shape of the leg around the guide line. Make this leg the biggest of the three. Break up the leg into segments and make the segments at the top bigger than those on the bottom. Add a series of short strokes on the sides of the top segment for hair.

Step 12: Use the arc on top of the body as a guide to draw the bumblebee's wing. Darken the shape of the guide but make the lines a bit wavier. At the bottom, curve the lines in toward the body, so that the base of the wing is thin.

Step 13: Use the remaining shapes as guide to draw the rest of the bee's body. Simply draw a series of short strokes along the edges of the guides to create the bumblebee's furry body. The wings are transparent, so draw the strokes for the body inside the shapes of the wings. Curve the path of the strokes in the middle so that the thorax is slightly taller and thinner than the initial circle. Don't overlap the legs as you draw the bottom edge of the thorax. On the lower, left side of the abdomen, draw a small, V-shaped line for the stinger.

Step 14: To the left of each leg, draw a similar shape for the legs that are on the other side of the body. Use the first set of legs as templates as you draw these legs. Draw this set of legs smaller than the first set. To the left of the wing, draw a tall, arc-like shape for the wing that's on the other side of the bumblebee's body. Make this wing smaller than the first wing.

Step 15: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing of a bumblebee.

Final Step: Color your drawing! Color lightly at first and gradually build up to darker colors. Draw a series of thick stripes across the body using black. Use short strokes as you add the color to create a furry texture on the body. Color the eye and legs black too but use a lighter value in certain sections to create highlights. On the back portion of the abdomen, use gray to create black and white stripes. Add the bright stripes using different shades of yellow and orange. Use darker shades like red-orange and brown along the bottom to create shadows. Use a lighter shade of colors along the top to emphasize the transparency of the wings. Add veins on the wings using dark brown and color the insides of the shapes using light brown. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for a more accurate depiction of a bumblebee.
