Please PAUSE the "How to Draw a Cat (Cartoon)" video after each step to draw at your own pace.

 

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw two curved lines next to each other for the cartoon kitten's eyes. Make the lines thick to represent eyelashes. The shape of the curved lines should be similar to a half-circle. Pay attention to where the lines are. Don't place them too close together.

 

Step 2: Under each line, draw a small circle for the irises. The circle on the left should be close to the right tip of the line. The circle on the right should be closer to the middle of the line. Above each eye, draw a small curved line for the cat's eyebrows.

Step 3: Inside each iris, off to the side, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. In the middle of each iris, draw a big dot for the cartoon kitten's pupils.

 

Step 4: Near the lower, right side of the eye on the left, draw a small triangle for the nose.

Step 5: Below the kitten's nose, draw a small W-shaped line for the mouth. Below the mouth, draw a tiny curved line for the chin.

Step 6: For the cartoon kitten's head, first draw a short, vertical line on either side of the eyes. The line on the right should be a bit farther away from the eye than the line on the left. Now draw a curved horizontal line with three spikes in the middle high above the eyes .

 

Step 7: Draw the cat's ears in the blank sections of the head as triangle- like shapes. The shape of the ear consists of two curved lines that come to a point at the top. Draw the cat's ear on the right the same way. Draw two curved lines that meet at the top. Inside each ear, draw a curved line on the insides and a few zigzags at the bottoms for extra detail.

Step 8: Using a jagged line to represent fur, draw the cartoon kitten's cheeks on either side. Curve the shape of the cheeks. The lines should end close to the chin.

 

Step 9: Draw two curved horizontal lines between the kitten's cheeks to create the collar.

Step 10: Draw a small oval below the cat's collar for the tag.

Step 11: Below the collar, draw a half-circle made up broken, jagged lines for the kitten's furry chest.

 

Step 12: Under the chest, near the middle, draw a short, vertical line for the cartoon kitten's first front leg. Complete the shape of the leg by drawing a diagonal line on the right side. Curve the diagonal line up to meet the vertical line and form the round paw.

Step 13: Draw a similar shape on the left side for the kitten's other front leg. Add a couple of small, curved lines on the tips of the paws to separate the toes.

 

Step 14: Draw a short horizontal line to the right of the front legs for the bottom of the torso. Draw a curved line on the right side of the head for the back portion of the cat's body.

Step 15: Draw the kitten's hind leg by first drawing two diagonal lines on the lower right side of the body. Then add a curved line at the bottom for the paw and a couple of small lines at the tip for the toes.

Step 16: Draw the same shape to the left for the cartoon kitten's other hind leg. Don't forget the toes!

 

 

Step 17: Draw a series of wavy lines on the upper, right side of the body for the cartoon kitten's tail. Add a few jagged lines on the sides of the tail to make it furry. The tip should be pointy too. Curve the line back toward the left so that it doesn't end too far from where it started.

 

Step 18: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make the drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

Final Step: Color your cartoon kitten drawing! To get a gradient effect on the eyes, color the top part dark blue and the bottom part light blue. You can color your cat any way you'd like or leave it blank like this for a white kitty. Color the ears, nose and collar pink, and the tag yellow. Remember to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
