Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw two curved lines next to each other for the cartoon puppy's eyes. Pay attention to the placement of the lines. Don't draw them too close together. Make the lines thick to represent eyelashes. The shape of the curved lines should be similar to a half-circle. Sketch these lines lightly at first. When you get the shape and placement right, darken them.

 

Step 2: Under each line, draw a small circle for the irises. The circle on the left should be close to the right tip of the line. The circle on the right should be closer to the middle of the line. Above each eye, draw a small curved line for the cartoon puppy's eyebrows.

 

Step 3: Inside each iris, off to the side, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. In the middle of each iris, draw a big dot for the puppy's pupils.

 

Step 4: Near the lower, right side of the eye on the left, draw a shape similar to an oval for the puppy's nose. The nose should be curved at the top like an oval but pointy as the bottom.

 

Step 5: Below the nose, draw a long, curved, horizontal line for the cartoon puppy's mouth.

Step 6: Directly under the mouth, draw a small U-shaped line for the puppy dog's tongue.

 

Step 7: Draw the cartoon puppy's head by first drawing a short vertical line close the the eye on the left. High above the eyes, draw a curved horizontal line for the top of the head. Add a few bumps along the middle of this line for the fur.

 

Step 8: Draw the ears on either side of the head, near the top. The shape of the ears consist of a couple of curved lines at the top and a V-shaped line at the bottom. The puppy's ear on the right side should be a bit bigger than the one on the left because of perspective.

 

Step 9: Draw a curved line on etiher side of the mouth for the rest of the cartoon puppy's head. As you draw these curved lines, make it jagged to represent fur. The line on the right should be longer because the head is slightly turned.

 

Step 10: Under the head, draw two curved horizontal lines on top of each other for the collar. Don't draw the lines too far apart, otherwise the puppy's collar will be too thick.

Step 11: Draw a small oval below the collar for the dog tag.

 

Step 12: Under the head on the left side, draw a line that curves to the right for the cartoon puppy's chest. Break up the line and make it jagged to represent fur.

 

Step 13: To the right of the chest, draw two short vertical lines for the first leg. Curve the shape of the leg to the left to form the foot. Add a couple of lines at the tip for the puppy's toes.

 

Step 14: Draw the cartoon puppy's other front leg the same way. Use short, vertical lines for the top part of the leg and a curved line for the foot.

 

Step 15: Draw the cartoon puppy's body by first drawing a horizontal line to the right of the first leg. Then draw a longer curved line to the right of the head for the back portion of the body.

Step 16: Draw the hind leg the same way as the front legs. Start with two short, vertical lines. Then add the foot as a curved line that points to the left. Don't forget the puppy's toes! The fourth leg is hidden behind the front legs.

 

Step 17: On the top, right side of the body, draw two short lines that come to a point for the puppy's tail.

 

Step 18: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your cartoon puppy drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

 

Final Step: Color your cartoon puppy using color pencils, markers or even crayons! Color the body yellow or light brown for a labrador or golden retriever look. To get a gradient effect on the eyes, color the top parts dark brown and the bottom parts light brown. Color the nose brown as well but leave a thin sliver at the top blank to represent shine. Color the tongue pink, the collar red and the tag gray. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
