Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw two short, diagonal lines for the cartoon rooster's eyebrows. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shape and angles right, make the lines darker and thicker. Curve the outer tips of the eyebrows down and the inner tips up.

 

Step 2: Under each eyebrow, draw a curved line for the bottom of the rooster's eyes. The eye on the right should be smaller because of the perspective. Inside each eye, close to the eyebrows, add a dot for the pupils.

 

Step 3: Add the beak by first drawing a curved line under the eye on the left. Continue drawing the line toward the bottom right so that it forms the tip of the beak. Draw the rest of the rooster's mouth as a wavy line that stretches to the left. Add a slit at the top for the nostril.

 

Step 4: Under the top part of the beak, draw a V-shaped line for the bottom part. Inside, draw smaller V-shaped line for the open mouth. Inside the rooster's mouth, draw a couple of small, curved lines for the tongue.

 

Step 5: Above the eyes, draw a curved line for the first part of the fleshy crest called a comb. The curved line should be similar to a tilted letter U. Draw another curved line at the top for the second part of the rooster's comb.

Step 6: Continue drawing the cartoon rooster's comb by adding another curved line at the top. Add a last curved line to the comb but make the tip curve down a lot farther.

 

Step 7: To the left of the face, draw a long, sloping line for the first part of the head and neck. To the right of the rooster's face, draw a longer line that's wavy for the other edge of the head and neck.

 

Step 8: Connect the lines on the sides by drawing a series of V-shaped lines at the bottom.

 

Step 9: Under the beak, draw two long, curved lines for the fleshy part called the wattle. The rooster's wattle should be similar to two U-shaped lines.

 

Step 10: On the lower, left side of the neck, draw a long, curved line for the folded wing. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the length and shape right, darken the line. Draw a couple more curved lines on the left side for the rooster's wing feathers.

Step 11: Under the rooster's wing, draw the top part of the leg as two sloping lines with smaller V-shaped lines at the bottom.

 

Step 12: Now draw the bottom part of the leg by first drawing two parallel vertical lines. Draw the toe pointing toward us using a series of curved lines underneath. Make the tip pointy for the sharp talons. Add another toe the same way on the right side. On the left side of the rooster's leg, draw a small spike for the spur.

 

Step 13: Draw a couple of lines to the left of the wing and leg for the back portion of the cartoon rooster's body. Add a long curved line from the neck to the leg for the front part of the body.

 

Step 14: Draw a curved line on the right side of the body for the rooster's other wing. Then add the top part of the other leg the same way as the first one.

 

Step 15: Draw the bottom part of the leg by first drawing two parallel sloping lines. Draw the first toe that points to the left by using a series of wavy lines. This foot is facing sideways, so the rooster's other two toes will be longer and point to the right. Draw the tips curling down and forming a point for the talons and add a spike on the left for the spur.

Step 16: Starting on the left side of the body, draw a long curved line for the first part of the rooster's tail. The line should curve up, then to the left and have a spike on the end. It should be similar to a giant question mark.

 

Step 17: Draw a series of big V-shaped lines along the left side for the bottom part of the rooster's tail. You can add more V-shaped lines for more feathers. It's okay if the lines overlap one another a bit. Tilt the V-shaped lines near the top a little more.

 

Step 18: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your cartoon rooster drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

 

Final Step: Color your cartoon rooster drawing using color pencils, markers or even crayons! Use red for the comb and wattle. Color the head and tail light brown. You can, of course, color your drawing differently if you'd like. For this color scheme, use dark brown for the rooster's body. Use red for the feet and beak, dark red for the inside of the mouth and pink for the tongue.
