To draw a Grizzly Bear step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

 

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

 

Step 1: Draw a big circle as a guide for the grizzly bear's head. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. The bigger this circle is, the bigger the head will be. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, trace the outer rim of a glass, a bowl or any other object with a circular edge. Step 2: Draw a long, curved, horizontal line across the circle for a construction line. Draw this line slightly higher than the middle. Construction lines will help you place the grizzly bear's facial features later. On top of the horizontal line, near the left side, draw a shorter, curved, vertical line for another guide.

 

 

Step 3: Draw a small circle on the lower, left side of the head as a guide for the muzzle. Use the four-marks technique to draw this circle too. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the grizzly bear's head. The bottom of this circle shouldn't touch the lower edge of the big head circle.

 

Step 4: On the top, right side of the head, draw a small arc as a guide for the first ear.

 

 

Step 5: Draw another arc on the top, left side of the head as a guide for the grizzly bear's other ear.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

 

Step 6: Lightly sketch the eyes inside the head as two small circles. The grizzly bear's eyes should be sitting on top of the horizontal guide line and on either side of the vertical guide line. When you get the position and size of the eyes right, darken the lines.

As you darken the shapes of the eyes, make the sides a bit pointier. Add a couple of curved lines around each eye for a bit of bare skin. Add a few short strokes too to represent the fur around the eyes. Notice how small the grizzly bear's eyes are in relation to the massive head.

 

 

Step 7: Inside each eye, off to the side, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. In the middle of each eye, draw a dot for the pupils. Now shade in the rest of the grizzly bear's eyes. As you shade, use a value that's lighter than the pupils. Don't overlap the tiny glare circles. To give the eye a rounder look, use a dark value at the top and gradually make it lighter toward the bottom.

 

Step 8: Lightly sketch a small circle inside the muzzle for the nose. The nose should be near the left side of the muzzle. Pay attention to its size. When you get the size and position of the grizzly bear's nose right, darken the lines. Curve the left side of the line inward and add a small oval for the first nostril.

Add another small oval on the right for the other nostril. Curve the right side of the oval outward to create the side of the grizzly bear's nose. Darken the top edge of the circle. Darken the bottom edge of the nose. Add a small, vertical line inside near the bottom. Use a series of short strokes along the edges to represent fur.

 

 

Step 9: Draw a sloping line from the nose to the eye on the left for the top of the grizzly bear's muzzle. Use the initial lines as guide to help you position the top of the muzzle. Under the nose, draw a long, horizontal line for the mouth. Sketch the line lightly at first. The right side should curve up slightly but stay within the initial circle. The left side of the line should curve up toward the nose. Darken the line using short strokes for fur.

Step 10: Draw a series of short strokes under the mouth for the grizzly bear's chin. Follow the basic path of the initial circle as you draw the lines for the chin. Draw a series of longer strokes on the top part of the muzzle for extra detail on the fur.

 

 

Step 11: Use the small arc on the top, right side of the head as a guide to draw the first ear. Draw a series of short strokes along the path of the arc to create the furry ear. Add a few more strokes within the shape of the arc for the ear's opening.

 

Step 12: Use the arc on the top, right side of the head as a guide to draw the grizzly bear's other ear the same way. Use short strokes along the path of the arc and longer strokes inside.

 

Step 13: Draw a series of short strokes along the basic path of the main circle to create the shape of the head. The top of the head should be higher than the initial circle. The sides should be close to the circle. The longer you draw these strokes, the shaggier the grizzly bear's fur will appear. Make the strokes longer at the bottom so that they almost come to a point.

 

 

Step 14: Draw a few more strokes within the shape of the head for extra detail on the fur. Add some strokes at the top of the head, on the sides and at the bottom. These strokes will also help guide the orientation of the grizzly bear's fur when you shade later.

Step 15: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

 

 

Final Step: Add some shading to your grizzly bear drawing for extra detail. Use a dark value for the ears. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Shade using tiny strokes to emphasize the fur's texture. The strokes should go in the general direction of the fur. They should radiate outward from the middle. Separate each individual stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates a more fur-like texture. Use a dark value for the fur around the eyes too. Notice how the strokes for the fur wrap around the shapes of the grizzly bear's eyes. Add the value very lightly at first, and then gradually build up to a darker value. Use a dark value for the nose. Leave a thin strip at the top blank to represent shine.

Continue to add more strokes on top of each other to build up the layers of the grizzly bear's fur. Shading can be a very slow process, so be patient and take breaks. Use more value on the nose to make it even darker, especially the nostrils. Don't push down too hard with your pencil though. The graphite can become shiny, and you might tear the paper. It's always a good idea to use reference for a more accurate drawing. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
