The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the left side of the paper as a guide for the mole's head. To draw the circle, first make four small marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: Draw a long, curved, horizontal line across the circle as a guide to help you place the mole's facial features later. Add a curved, vertical line on the top, left side for another guide.

Step 3: Make a small mark on the far right side of the head for the first part of the guide for the body. This mark will determine the length of the mole's body, so don't draw it too close to the head. Now draw two long, curved, horizontal lines that connect the mark to the head to complete the guide for the body. The entire shape of the guide for the body should be similar to an oval with the head blocking the left side.

Step 4: Draw a long, curved line from the right side of the head to the bottom of the body as the guide for the mole's front leg. Draw another curved line on the left side of the head as a guide for the other front leg.

Step 5: On the lower, right side of the body, draw a short, curved line as a guide for the hind leg. To the right, draw another short, curved line as a guide for the mole's tail.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 6: Above the horizontal guide line, near the middle of the head, draw a tiny dot for the eye. Moles have tiny eyes, so just a small dot will do. Draw a series of short strokes around the eye for the fur.

Step 7: On the left side of the head, lightly sketch a small oval for the nose. Place the nose directly on the edge of the initial circle. When you get the position right, add two small circles inside for the mole's nostrils. Darken the edge of the oval and curve the sides in toward the nostrils. Add a couple of curves on the bottom edge for a few bumps on the nose.

Step 8: Draw a series of short lines under the nose for the rest of the mole's snout. Add a few more short strokes around the nose to make the snout longer. Use the initial lines as guides. Draw more short strokes below the nose for the mouth. The mouth should stretch to the right toward the eye. Under the mouth, draw a smaller curved line that's made up of short strokes for the mole's chin. Draw these strokes short and close together for a fuzzy texture. Longer strokes would create longer fur.

Step 9: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the mole's head. Use a series of short strokes along the top and left edge of the original circle to create the shape of the head. Follow the path of the circle as you add the strokes but make the shape of the head a bit wider.

Step 10: Lightly sketch an oval on the right side of the arc to the right of the head for the mole's first front paw. At the top of the paw, draw a small, long oval with slightly pointed sides for the first claw. Draw a curved line above and below the claw for the first digit. Add the next digit the same way. Start with a slightly longer oval for the claw. Then add the digit using curved lines.

Continue to draw the remaining three digits the same way. Start with the oval-like claw and then add the digit. Make each claw slightly bigger the farther down it is on the paw. For moles, all the digits will point in the same direction. In this case it's to the right. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the shapes right, darken the lines. The bottom claw should be a bit smaller, and it should be below the body. Use a broken line to darken the initial oval to create the rest of the mole's paw.

Step 11: Use the arc to the left of the head as a guide to draw the other paw the same way. Starting at the top, draw the claws as thin, pointy shapes and then add the digits as short, curved lines. Follow the curvature of the initial line as you add the claws to the left of it. Because of the angle, the mole's claws near the bottom and the top will be smaller than the ones in the middle.

Step 12: Use the big, oval-like shape to the right of the head as a guide to draw the rest of the mole's body. Darken the path of the guide using short strokes. Add an extra small line behind the head for a crease. Add a crease on the lower, right side of the mole's body too. Add the base of the front leg by darkening the guide. Use slightly longer strokes along the bottom part of the body that's below the head.

Step 13: Use the curved line on the lower, right side of the body as a guide to draw the foot. On the left side, draw a few curved, pointy shapes for the claws and toes. Then darken the right side for the rest of the mole's foot.

Step 14: Use the curved line on the right side of the mole's body as a guide to draw the short tail. Draw a series of short strokes around the guide to create the shape of the tail.

Step 15: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guidelines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your mole drawing for extra detail. Leave a strip on top of the nose blank for highlight. Shade using a series of short strokes all over the head to simulate fur. Moles don't have a pattern like spots or stripes on their coats, so just use a medium-to-dark value all over the body. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. As you shade, use strokes that go in the general direction of the mole's fur. The strokes should radiate outward from the snout. Shade lightly at first and gradually get to the level of darkness that the fur should be. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.

Don't shade the mole's paws yet. The paws are lighter and a lot less furry than the rest of the body. Use a lighter value on certain areas, like the snout and back of the head, for highlights and sheen on the fur. Continue shading until the entire body is covered in a medium-to-dark value. Use a value that's lighter than the body to shade the paws and claws. Use a medium value to create shadows and give the mole's paws more dimension and volume.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps to ground the mole so it doesn't appear to be floating.

It's a good idea to use reference as you draw. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
