How to Draw a Raccoon (Cartoon)

Written step-by-step video tutorial:
For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw two short, curved, horizontal lines for the top part of the raccoon's eyes. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the shape of the small arcs right. Add a line under each arc for the bottom part of the eyes. Don't draw the eyes too close together.
Step 2: Inside each eye, draw a tiny dot for the pupils. Draw the pupils close to the right edge of each eye. Above each eye , draw a broken, curved line for the raccoon's eyebrows.
Step 3: Below the eyes, off to the left, lightly sketch a small circle for the raccoon's nose. When you get the size and placement right, darken the nose but make the bottom pointier. Add a small line at the bottom of the nose and two shaded ovals on each side for the nostrils.
Step 4: Under the nose, lightly sketch a curved line for the mouth. Continue to draw the line on the left side and curve it up toward the eye to create the raccoon's muzzle. When you get the shape of the muzzle right, darken the line. Use short strokes as you darken the lines to represent fur.
Step 5: Starting at the left side of the muzzle, draw a series of angled lines for the left side of the raccoon's head. The angled lines should be similar to the letter V on its side to represent fur. Draw a similar set of lines to the right of the muzzle for the other side of the head. The small V- shaped lines for the fur should be farther away from the muzzle than the left side. Don't draw the sides of the head too high up. The tops should end at about eye level.
Step 6: Draw a short line on each side to make the raccoon's head slightly taller. High above the eyes, lightly sketch a curved line for the top of the head. As you darken the top of the head, add a few spikes for the fur standing up.
Step 7: On the top, left side of the head, draw a line similar to an upside-down letter V for the raccoon's ear. Inside the ear, draw a few lines for the fur and ear structure.
Step 8: On the top, right side , draw another line shaped like and upside-down letter V for the raccoon's other ear. Add a few lines inside for the fur and ear structure.
Step 9: Draw a series of short strokes around the eyes for the outline of the raccoon's face "mask." Start at the outer tips of the eyebrows to draw the outline of the black markings around the eyes. The outlines should be long and stretch the whole length of the cheeks. Use broken lines as you draw the outline for a fur-like texture.
Step 10: Draw a series of short strokes under the head for the furry chest. Like the sides of the head, use v-shaped lines to represent fur on the chest. The chest should curve low to form a U-like shape under the raccoon's head.
Step 11: To the right of the chest, draw two short, vertical lines for the top part of the first leg. Now add a curved line for the bottom of the foot and draw the raccoon's toes as two short lines inside.
Step 12: On the left side, draw the other front leg the same way. Use two short, vertical lines for the top part of the leg and a curved line underneath for the raccoon's foot.
Step 13: Draw a few short strokes to the right of the legs for the bottom of the torso. To the right of the head, draw a curved, broken line for the top part of the raccoon's body.
Step 14: Add the raccoon's hind leg by first drawing a sloping line on the lower, right side. Draw a curved line under that for the foot. Draw a vertical line above for the left edge of the leg and add the toes at the bottom.
Step 15: To the left, draw the visible portion of the raccoon's other hind leg the same way.
Step 16: To the right of the body, lightly sketch a long, curved line for the raccoon's tail. When you get the shape right, darken the tail using broken lines to represent fur. The tail should be wide and somewhat pointy at the end.
Step 17: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your raccoon drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your raccoon drawing using color pencils, markers or even crayons! Use black for the nose, the section around the eyes, the ears , the feet and the stripes on the tail. Add the color lightly at first, then gradually make it darker. Leave a section above the eyes blank, along with the cheeks, chest and underside. Color the rest of the body gray and blend in a little bit of brown too. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
