Pencils (an HB lead pencil is best for light sketches)	Kneaded Eraser	Drawing Paper

Step 1: Sketching Construction Guidelines

Establish the foundation of your sketch on your drawing paper using light construction shapes and structural guides.

Proportional Head and Muzzle Guides

• Head Circle: With your pencil, lightly draw a circle as a guide for the head. To easily draw a circle, place marks for the circle's height and width. Then connect them with curved lines. You can always trace a circular object if needed!
• Construction Lines: Draw a curved horizontal line slightly below the center of the head circle, and a curved vertical line on the top left side.
• Muzzle Oval: Sketch a big oval on the bottom half of the head. Keep the bottom left side slightly outside the circle. Remember to draw lightly to make future erasing easier.

Ears and Body Framework

• Tall Ears: Mark a spot high above the top right of the head and draw a tall arc to construct the first ear. Do this again on the left to complete both long ear guides.
• Main Body Circle: Below the head, sketch a larger circle using the same "small marks" method. This body guide should be roughly 1.5 times the size of the head circle.
• Legs and Hindquarters: Draw two vertical lines tapering downward under the body for the front leg, and add a half-circle for the foot at the end. Add a duplicate shape to the left for the second leg. Finish the guide with a long curved line extending right and down for the back portion. Close it off with a horizontal line at the base for the hind foot.

Step 2: Drawing the Final Details

Refine the initial shapes, add expressive facial features, and create realistic textures.

Facial Features and Expression

• Eyes and Eyelashes: Sketch a small circle for the eye resting on top of the horizontal guide line. Darken the path and add a thick, curved shape at the top for eyelashes, plus a bare skin line underneath and a tiny highlight circle inside. Draw a curved line and upper lash peak on the left to indicate the partial view of the opposite eye.
• Nose and Muzzle: Place a small V-shaped line near the edge of the head circle for the nose. Thicken it with an angled line and short structural strokes above. Draw sloping lines to the left and right to create the mouth, darken the muzzle contours around the oval guides, and finish with a wavy line below for the chin.
• Head and Ears: Refine the right ear by curving it more than the guide and adding long inner lines to represent the opening. Repeat this on the left ear. Trace the main head circle, flattening the sides and widening the base. Make sure to use short, angled strokes to convey a soft, furry texture.

Legs and Furry Body Outlines

• Front and Hind Limbs: Darken the center leg guidelines to secure the shape, adding two short vertical strokes at the base to divide the toes. Outline the left leg using short strokes for fur. Complete the hind foot outline and separate its toes using short curved lines.
• Body Outline: Follow the remaining outer structural lines using quick, short strokes to create the furry coat.

Step 3: Erasing and Shading

Clean up the artwork and use graphite pencil techniques to apply dimensional value and shadows.

Tonal Values and Texturing

• Clean Up: With a plastic eraser or kneaded eraser, begin to erase the primary construction guidelines carefully. It's OK to leave some faint lines behind. You'll add shading in this step, which will cover up these lines.
• Head and Eye Contrast: Using your graphite pencils, fill the main eye areas with a rich, dark value while keeping the top highlights crisp and white. Leave the regions surrounding the eyes and the lower head blank to portray patches of white fur. Darken the muzzle and the outer edges of the long ears.
• Body Tone and Fur Direction: Layer a medium graphite tone across the entire body. Direct each pencil stroke to match the natural growth of a rabbit's fur. Gradually apply deep shadow tones beneath the body and limbs to create depth, rendering smaller concentrated patches of dark value to establish realistic clumps of fur. Finish your piece by drawing long sweeps on the muzzle for whiskers and a bed of grass underneath the rabbit using quick strokes of various sizes.
