To draw this cartoon German Shepherd Puppy step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

 

Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

 

Step 1: Draw two small ovals for the cartoon German shepherd puppy's eyes. Sketch lightly at first to get the shapes right. Space out the eyes. Don't draw them too close together. Shade in the ovals but leave a couple of circles blank inside each oval to represent glare. The eye on the right should be a tiny bit smaller than the eye on the left.

 

Step 2: Below the eye on the right, draw a small sideways oval for the nose. Make the bottom edge of the nose a bit pointy instead of curved. Shade in the dog's nose but leave a thin strip blank at the top for shine.

 

 

Step 3: Draw a curved line on the right side for the muzzle. The German shepherd's muzzle starts to the right of the nose, then curves down and to the left. Draw a short, curved line for the mouth near the bottom of the muzzle.

 

Step 4: To the right of the eyes, draw a line that curves up and to the left for the front of the puppy's head. The top edge of the head should be high above the eyes. Use jagged lines at the top for fur.

 

 

Step 5: On the top, left side of the head, draw a big, triangle-like shape for the German shepherd puppy's first ear. Within the ear, on the right, draw a long line for structure. At the bottom, draw some jagged lines for fur.

Step 6: Draw another triangle-like shape on the top, right side for the dog's other ear. Draw a line inside for structure.

 

Step 7: Below the ear on the left, draw a line that curves toward the right for the rest of the cartoon German shepherd puppy's head. Use jagged lines for fur. This line should almost meet the line for the muzzle at the bottom.

 

 

Step 8: Under the head, on the right side, draw a line that curves down and to the left for the puppy's chest.

 

Step 9: To the left of the chest, add the first leg by first drawing two short, vertical lines. Connect the vertical lines with a horizontal line at the bottom to close off the shape of the German shepherd's leg.

 

 

Step 10: Draw a similar shape on the right side for the dog's other front leg.

Step 11: To the left of the legs, draw a curved, horizontal line for the underside of the German shepherd dog's body. Add another curved line to the left of the head for the top of the body.

 

Step 12: To the left of the underside, draw a shape similar to the front legs for the first hind leg. The dog's leg is made up of two vertical lines connected by a short, horizontal line at the bottom.

 

 

Step 13: To the right, draw the other hind leg the same way. Make all the legs the same length. Draw a curved line on the left side, above the first hind leg, for the rest of the cartoon German shepherd 's body. The body lines shouldn't connect.

 

Step 14: Draw the German shepherd's tail on the gap on the top, left side of the body using a series of jagged lines. The more jagged lines you draw, the furrier the tail will look. The tip of the puppy's tail should be pointy.

 

 

Step 15: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your German shepherd dog drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

 

Final Step: Color your cartoon puppy drawing so that it looks like a German shepherd! Use color pencils, markers or crayons! Using dark gray, draw an outline on the head, around the muzzle, and on the body and tail for the typical German shepherd markings. Color the inside of the outlines dark gray. You can also color the body a different pattern for a different dog breed! Color the rest of the body light brown. Start coloring lightly and slowly build up to the level of darkness you want. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
