To draw this cartoon Koala step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

 

Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

 

Step 1: Lightly sketch two small circles for the koala's eyes. When you get the shapes right, darken the lines. Don't draw the eyes too close together. Leave room in the middle for the nose. Shade in the eyes but leave a couple of circles blank inside each eye to represent glare. The eye on the right should be a tiny bit smaller than the eye on the left.

 

Step 2: Between the eyes, draw a small arc similar to an upside-down letter U for the nose. Add a small line at the bottom to close off the shape of the koala's nose.

 

 

Step 3: Below the nose, draw a short, horizontal line for the bottom of the head. On the right, curve the line up to create the koala's cheek. Curve the line up on the left side too to create the other cheek.

 

Step 4: Continue to draw the line on the right side upward and then to the left for the top of the head. Pay attention to how high the head goes. Sketch lightly at first to get the line right. When you get the shape right, darken the line. Add a couple of jagged lines at the top for the koala's fur.

 

 

Step 5: On the left side of the head, draw a curved line for the first ear. Koalas have big ears, so make this curved line big. It should be similar to the letter C. Add some jagged lines along the way to represent fur.

Step 6: Draw another big, curved line on the right side of the head for the koala's other ear. Remember to use jagged lines along the way, especially at the bottom to represent fur.

 

Step 7: Draw a few lines inside each ear to emphasize the koala's structure and fur.

 

 

Step 8: Under the head, on the right side, draw a long arc with a sideways orientation for the koala's arm.

 

Step 9: Under the arm, draw a wider, more round arc for the top part of the koala's leg.

 

 

Step 10: At the bottom, draw a curved line for the foot. The top part of the koala's leg should overlap the foot a bit.

Step 11: Draw a long, curved line on the left side to complete the shape of the koala's body. The line for the body should stretch form the lower, left side of the head to the foot.

 

 

Step 12: Draw a tree trunk using a couple of lines so that the koala is holding on to something. First draw a long, vertical line on the right side. Use a straight edge if you need to. Then add shorter lines above and below the koala for the rest of the tree.

 

Step 13: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your koala drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

 

 

Final Step: Color your cartoon koala drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use gray for the fur but leave the ears and a strip under the head and body blank. For an easier drawing, simply color the koala's whole body gray without the white bits. Color the nose black but leave a thin strip at the top blank to represent shine. Color the inside of the ears pink. Add some pink to the mouth under the nose too. Color the tree trunk light brown. Don't overlap the koala as you color the tree trunk. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
