To draw this Wallaby step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

 

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

Step 1: Draw a circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for the first part of the wallaby's body. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: On the top, left side, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the wallaby's head using the same technique. This circle should be about one- fourth the size of the first one. Don't draw the circles too close together.

 

 

Step 3: Draw a curved, horizontal line across the head to help you place the wallaby's facial features later. Add a curved, vertical line on the top, right side of the head for another construction line.

 

Step 4: Draw a small circle on the bottom half of the head as a guide for the wallaby's muzzle. Pay attention the size of this circle. The left side should stick outside the shape of the head.

 

 

Step 5: On top of the head, draw two small, arcs as guides for the wallaby's ears. The tops of the arcs should be a bit pointy, and they should tilt outward.

Step 6: Draw two curved lines that connect the first two circles to complete the guide for the wallaby's body. This shape should be narrow at the top and wide at the bottom.

 

Step 7: Below the head, draw two long vertical lines as guides for the wallaby's arms. The arm on the right should bend slightly to the left , and the arm on the left should bend slightly to the right.

 

 

Step 8: Under the body, draw two long lines that bend toward the left at the bottom as guides for the legs. These lines should be similar to a backward letter L. Pay attention to their length in relation to the wallaby's body.

 

Step 9: Under the body, draw a line that curves to the right as a guide for the wallaby's tail. It's okay if this line overlaps the guide for the leg on the right a bit.

 

 

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 10: Lightly sketch the eyes inside the head as two small circles. Use the initial lines as guides. When you get the size and position of the wallaby's eyes right, darken the lines. Make the sides of the eyes pointy. Add a thick shape over each eye for the eyelashes.

The eyelashes should overlap the wallaby's eyes a bit. Inside each eye, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. Shade the insides of the eyes but don't overlap the tiny glare circles. Make the middle part of each eye extra dark for the pupils. Add a couple of lines around the eyes for extra detail. Add a bit of light value around the eyes for fur.

 

Step 11: Inside the muzzle, near the left side, lightly sketch a small circle for the wallaby's nose. When you get the size and placement of the nose right, darken the lines. Curve the right edge inward and shade a small circle at the tip for the nostril. Make the bottom part of the nose thin and add a small line at the bottom.

 

 

Step 12: Draw a line from the top of the nose to the eye on the left for the top part of the muzzle. Under the nose, on the left side, draw a small curved line for the first part of the wallaby's mouth. Draw another line under the nose that curves to the right for the rest of the mouth. Draw another line under the mouth for the chin. Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the chin.

 

Step 13: Darken the arc on the top, right side of the head for the first ear. Draw a series of short strokes within the arc for the fur found inside the ear. Darken the arc on the left for the wallaby's other ear but make it a bit thinner. Draw a line through the middle to indicate the ear being turned.

 

 

Step 14: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the head. Draw a series of short strokes along the path of the circle to create the furry shape of the head. Add some strokes above the eyes to emphasize the brows. Add more strokes inside the shape to give the wallaby's head more structure.

Step 15: Use the angled line under the head as a guide to draw the first arm. Draw the shape of the wallaby's arm around the guide. The top part should be wide and the bottom thin. Use short strokes as you draw the shape of the arm for the fur. At the bottom, draw a series of short, V-shaped lines for the digits. Make the paw wide.

 

Step 16: Use short strokes to draw the shape of the wallaby's other arm around the guide line on the left. The digits won't be fully visible from this angle, so make them smaller.

 

 

Step 17: Use the angled line under the body on the right side as a guide to draw the first leg. Draw the shape of the wallaby's leg around the guide. The top part should be very wide and the bottom thin. Sketch lightly at first. Only darken the lines when you get the shape right. Use short strokes for fur. Add an extra angled line along the guide at the bottom for the smaller toe on the side. Make the tip of the shape pointy for the wallaby's big claw. The main toe should be big and curved.

 

Step 18: Use the angled line on the left as a guide to draw the wallaby's other leg the same way. Draw the leg around the guide. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the shape right. Draw the smaller toe on the side using an angled line. Make the main toe big and the claw pointy. Use short strokes for fur. The top part of the leg will be behind the body, so don't draw it.

 

 

Step 19: Draw a line made up of short strokes to extend the shape of the arm on the left. Use the rest of the initial lines as guides to draw the rest of the wallaby's body. Darken the outer edges of the guides to create the shape of the body. Add some short strokes inside the body to emphasize the shoulder. Use longer strokes for the bottom of the body. Draw a line above for the wallaby's pouch.

Step 20: Darken the last line under the body for the bottom edge of the tail. Don't overlap the leg. Add another curved line above for the top edge of the wallaby's tail.

 

 

Step 21: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

 

Final Step: Add some shading to your wallaby drawing for extra detail. Wallabies don't really have a pattern on their coats, so just use a medium value all over the body. Make the nose and the tip of the muzzle extra dark. Leave a strip on the nose blank for shine. Use a light value around the eyes and on a small section behind the muzzle. As you shade, use strokes that go in the general direction of the wallaby's fur. Use a light value for the chest and a dark value for the paws. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Add some shadows to your wallaby drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps to ground the wallaby so it doesn't appear to be floating. Continue to shade until you're happy with the result. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
