To draw this Schnauzer Dog step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for the front part of the schnauzer's body. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: To the left, draw another circle the same way as a guide for the back portion of the schnauzer's body. This circle should be about two-thirds the size of the first circle. The edges of the two circles should touch.

Step 3: On the top, right side, draw yet another circle as a guide for the dog's head. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle too. This circle should be about one-third the size of the first circle. Leave a small space between this circle and the first circle for the schnauzer's neck.

Step 4: Draw a curved, horizontal line across the head to help you place the schnauzer dog's facial features later. Draw a short, curved, vertical line on the top, right side for another construction guide.

Step 5: On the lower, right side of the head, draw another small circle as a guide for the muzzle. Use the four-marks method and sketch lightly to draw this circle. This circle should be a tiny bit smaller than the schnauzer's head. Only a small portion of this circle should overlap the head. The circles should be similar to a Venn diagram.

Step 6: On the top, left side of the head, draw a small, angled line as a guide for the schnauzer's first ear. To the right, draw a smaller, angled line as a guide for the dog's other ear.

Step 7: Under the first circle, draw a long, vertical line as a guide for the first front leg. Bend the line at the top for the joint and at the bottom for the foot. To the right, draw another vertical line as a guide for the other front leg. Bend this line at the bottom only.

Step 8: Under the second circle, draw a sloping, angled line as a guide for the first hind leg. As the line slopes to the lower left, bend the line twice in the middle for the joints and at the bottom for the foot. To the right, draw another sloping, angled line as a guide for the other leg. Only bend it once in the middle.

Step 9: Draw two short lines that connect the head to the body as a guide for the schnauzer's neck. Connect the first two circles using two lines to complete the torso. On the top, left side, draw a short line for the dog's tail.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 10: Inside the schnauzer's head, lightly sketch two small circles for the eyes. Use the initial lines as guides for placement. When you get the size and position right, darken the lines. Make the eye on the left a bit pointier on the sides. The shape of the eye should be similar to a little football. Draw a few lines around it for extra detail. Make the eye on the right a bit smaller and thinner because of the way the dog's head is turned.

Step 11: Inside each eye, off to the side, draw a tiny circle for highlights. In the middle of each eye, add a dot for the pupils. Shade the inside of the eyes but don't overlap the tiny highlight circles. Use a value that's slightly lighter than the value for the pupils. For a rounder look, use a dark value at the top of the dog's eyes and a lighter value near the bottom.

Above the schnauzer's eyes, draw two thick shapes that are made up of short strokes for the bushy brows. Use the initial lines and shapes as guides to help you place the bushy brows. The outer edges of each brow should curve downward a bit to create an arc-like shape. The brow on the right should be slightly narrower than the one on the left because of the dog's turned head. The tips of this brow should extend outside of the initial circle for the head.

Step 12: Inside the muzzle, near the top, lightly sketch a small oval for the schnauzer's nose. When you get the shape and size right, darken the lines. Curve the sides inward to create the nostrils. The nostril on the right should be smaller than the one on the left. Draw a vertical line between the nostrils. Make the bottom part narrower and use short strokes for the dog's fur.

Step 13: Below the nose, draw a series of short strokes for the fur-covered mouth. To the left of the dog's mouth, lightly sketch a series of short strokes toward the bottom of the initial circle for the mustache. Use the initial circle as a guide to draw this side of the mustache. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. To the right, use short strokes to draw the other side of the schnauzer's mustache the same way. Follow the edge of the initial circle as you draw the shape of the mustache.

Step 14: Along the bottom edge of the muzzle circle, draw short strokes for the beard. Draw a series of short strokes above the nose for the furry top of the muzzle. Use the top edge of the initial circle as a guide to draw the short strokes on the schnauzer's muzzle.

Step 15: Draw a curved line under the guide on the top, left for the dog's first folded ear. Darken the top part of the guide but make the sides and corners rounder. Draw a series of short strokes along the bottom of the ear for the furry base. Darken the guide on the right for the visible part of the schnauzer's other ear peeking from behind the head.

Step 16: Use short strokes along the top part of the initial circle for the schnauzer's furry head. On the bottom, draw a line that's made up of short strokes that curves up into the head for more fur. Add a few more short strokes on the sides of the face for more fur on the dog's head.

Step 17: Use the second line from the right as a guide to draw the first front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. When you get the leg right, use short strokes to darken the shape for a furry texture. Curve the shape of the dog's leg a bit. At the bottom, leave a small gap for the toes. Within the small gap, draw small, curved lines for the toes. On the tip of each toe, draw a tiny triangle for the nails.

Step 18: Draw a series of short strokes around the guide on the right for the schnauzer dog's other front leg. The left edge of this leg won't be visible. Draw a few short lines and tiny triangles at the bottom for the toes and nails.

Step 19: Use the line on the far left as a guide to draw the first hind leg. Draw this leg the same way. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the leg around it. Curve the shape of the leg where the guide line bends to create the joints. When you get the shape right, use short strokes to darken the furry leg. Make the shape of the schnauzer's leg thicker at the top. At the bottom, leave a small gap for the foot. At the bottom, draw a few curved lines for the toes. At the tip of each toe, add a tiny triangle for the dog's nails.

Step 20: Use the last line under the body as a guide to draw the other hind leg the same way. Use short strokes to draw the furry shape of the leg around the guide. Add the schnauzer's toes and nails at the bottom.

Step 21: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the dog's body. Draw a series of short strokes along the outer edges of the guides to create the furry shape of the body. Use slightly longer strokes along the underside of the body for the hanging fur found there. The longer you make the strokes, the shaggier the schnauzer's fur will be. Draw short strokes around the small line on the top, left side for the tail.

Step 22: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your schnauzer drawing for extra detail. Use a dark value for the nose but leave a thin strip at the top blank for highlight. Use a dark value for the area around the eyes and the top part of the muzzle. Use a medium value for the rest of the head but use a very light value the brows, mustache and beard. Use a medium value for the schnauzer's body too. Use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Leave the legs and chest blank. Separate each individual stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for an accurate depiction of a schnauzer. If you have a pet schnauzer or a similar dog breed, try to duplicate it's fur on your drawing. Using a light value, add some shadows to the white areas of the body to give the figure more volume.

Add a cast shadow underneath to ground the dog so that it doesn't appear to be floating. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
