Please PAUSE the "How to Draw a Kangaroo" video after each step to draw at your own pace.

Step 1: Draw an oval as a guide for the lower part of the kangaroo's body. It doesn't have to be a perfect shape. It's just a guide.

Step 2: Draw a small circle on the upper right side as a guide for the upper part of the kangaroo's body. The circle should be around half the size of the original oval, and their outer edges should meet.

Step 3: Draw an even smaller circle on the upper right side of that. Pay attention to the positions of the circles and their different sizes.

Step 4: Draw a small arc on the right side of the head as a guide for the kangaroo's muzzle.

Step 5: Draw a longer, thinner arc on top of the head as a guide for the kangaroo's ears.

Step 6: Draw a series of the curved lines that connect the major shapes to form the kangaroo's body.

Step 7: Draw an angled line in the upper part and below the lower part of the body as guides for the kangaroo's arms and legs. The top line begins in the middle of the circle, then angles to the right when it hits the edge. The lower line looks like the letter L.

Step 8: On the lower left side, draw two curved lines that come to a point to form the kangaroo's long tail.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 9: Draw the eye in the upper right side of the kangaroo's head. The shape of the eye is similar to a less-than sign (<) with a curved line on the right side for the kangaroo's eyeball. Shade the inside of the kangaroo's eye except for a small circle to represent glare. Make the outer lines thicker too. Draw a few strokes surrounding the eye for extra detail.

Step 10: Draw the kangaroo's nose on the tip of the initial arc. Start by lightly drawing an upside-down triangle. Then darken it, making it more round and adding short lines on top for fur and a shaded circle on the side for the kangaroo's nostril.

Step 11: Use the arc as a guide to draw the rest of the kangaroo's muzzle. Curve the lines more as you darken them for a more organic feel. Draw the kangaroo's mouth under the nose using quick, short strokes and add another line underneath for the chin.

Step 12: Use the arc on the kangaroo's head as a guide to draw the ears. Make the lines wavier as you darken them and make them appear thinner on top. Add another line in the ear for structure and a few quick strokes within it to represent fur. Draw the other ear using the same shape but don't draw any extra lines inside because it's facing the other way.

Step 13: Use the original circle as a guide to draw the rest of the kangaroo's head. Make the top part of the head flatter and use quick, short strokes at the bottom for the fur.

Step 14: Using the line as a guide, draw the kangaroo's arms. Draw lightly at first to get the structure of the first arm right. When you're happy with what you have, go ahead and darken it. Follow the bends of the line but make the corners rounder as you make the arm thicker. Use quick, short strokes to represent fur. Draw a few curved lines at the end for the kangaroo's fingers. Draw the other arm using a couple of lines. The hands come together, so the hand on the other side is not visible.

Step 15: Use the initial line as a guide to draw the kangaroo's big, powerful hind legs. Remember to draw the first leg lightly at first, then darken it when you have the structure right. Make the top of the leg thicker and draw it high up on the lower body. Use quick, short strokes as the leg curves for fur. Draw the lower part of the leg thinner and smoother. Draw the toes at the bottom along with a long claw. Draw the leg on the other side using the same technique. Draw the top part thicker and the bottom thinner and longer. Draw the kangaroo's toes and claws at the end.

Step 16: Darken the remaining lines to form the rest of the kangaroo's body. Draw a small line near the abdomen to represent the pouch and don't forget to darken the kangaroo's big tail too.

Step 17 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of them. It's okay to leave some behind. Also re-draw any final sketch lines that you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step (optional): Add some shading to your kangaroo drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps ground the kangaroo so it doesn't appear to be floating.

You can add more value throughout your drawing for extra detail. Remember to PAUSE the video any time you need help along the way.
