To draw this howling wolf step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to go at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step images below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to sketch next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and create art at your own pace.

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Draw a circle on the top right side as a guide for the howling wolf's head. The circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. Leave enough room at the bottom for the wolf's body.

Step 2: Draw a couple of arcs on top of the head as guides for the wolf's muzzle. The arc on the right should be thinner and shorter than the one on the left.

Step 3: Draw another small arc on the left side of the head as a guide for the wolf's ears.

Step 4: Draw two bigger circles under the head as guides for the wolf's body. These circles should be about twice the size of the first circle. The top circle should be almost directly under the head. The second circle should be off to the left more.

Step 5: Draw two lines under the body (one below each circle) as guides for the legs. Bend the lines a bit to indicate joints. The wolf's hind legs will be folded, so the line should be nearly flat.

Step 6: Draw a few lines that connect the major shapes and form the wolf's body.

Step 7: Draw a long curved line on the lower left side of the body as a guide for the wolf's tail.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 8: Draw a short, thick line at the top of the initial circle for the wolf's closed eye. Draw a few smaller lines around the closed eye as extra detail.

Step 9: Draw the wolf's nose on the tip of the muzzle. Darken the line on the edge of the muzzle, and then draw the bottom of the nose and the nostril inside. Shade the inside portion of the nose using a value that's lighter than the nostril. You can use an even lighter value on a section of the nose for the shine.

Step 10: Use the initial arcs as guides to draw the rest of the wolf's muzzle. Follow the path of the guide as you darken the line and create the top part of the muzzle. Add a tiny curved line near the top for the canine tooth peeking out. Draw the lower jaw by using the other arc as a guide. Use a thick dark line for the lower lip, quick, short strokes for the fuzzy chin and add the lower canine tooth too.

Step 11: Use the arc on the left as a guide to draw the wolf's ears. Darken the outer shape of the ear as you follow the basic path of the guide. Add a few strokes inside for the fur. Draw another curved line for the ear peeking from the other side.

Step 12: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the wolf's head. Use quick, short strokes as you darken the line to represent fur.

Step 13: Using the line on the right side as a guide, draw the howling wolf's front legs. Lightly sketch the shape of the first leg as you follow the basic path of the line. When you get the structure right, darken the lines using quick, short strokes to represent fur. Bend the leg at the joints and add some lines at the bottom for the wolf's toes and nails. Draw the visible portion of the leg on the other side using the first leg as a template.

Step 14: Use the bottom circle and the angled line under it to draw the howling wolf's hind legs. Lightly sketch the shape of the top of the leg inside the circle and the bottom of the leg along the path of the angled line. When you get the structure of the leg right, darken the lines using quick, short strokes to represent fur. Draw a few lines at the tip for the toes and nails. Add the visible part of the wolf's leg on the other side too.

Step 15: Draw the rest of the howling wolf's body by using the initial lines and shapes as guides. Use quick, short strokes to represent the wolf's thick coat as you follow the basic path of the guides.

Step 16: Use the line on the lower left side of the wolf's body to draw the tail. Curve the tail in front of the hind feet. Use longer strokes as you draw and make it come to a point at the end.

Step 17 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the original guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines that you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step (optional): Add some shading to your howling wolf drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Don't worry too much about the shading if you're going to add more value to your wolf drawing.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps ground the wolf so it doesn't appear to be floating.

You can add more value throughout your wolf drawing for extra detail. You can also omit the extra shading for a white wolf or an arctic wolf. Make certain sections darker and others lighter to get the typical gray wolf coat pattern. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Add the value by using strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Separate each individual stroke a bit to get a more furry texture. Adding the coat pattern can be quite time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. It's always a good idea to use reference for a more accurate drawing. Don't forget to pause the "How to Draw a Wolf (Howling)" After each step to draw at your own pace.
