How to Draw an Anglerfish

Please PAUSE the "How to Draw an Anglerfish" video after each step to draw at your own pace.
For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle as a guide for the anglerfish's body. The circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. Leave enough room on the sides for the big mouth and the tail.

Step 2: Draw an angled line on the right side of the circle as a guide for the anglerfish's open mouth. The shape of the line should be similar to the letter V.

Step 3: Draw another angled line under the anglerfish's mouth as a guide for the big jaw. Make the teeth different sizes. They can even overlap each other.

Step 4: Draw a big arc on the left side of the circle as a guide for the back portion of the anglerfish's boy. Add a couple of shorter lines at the front that connect the mouth to the body.

Step 5: Draw a straight line on top of the head with a circle at the end for the anglerfish's lure.

Step 6: Draw a couple of lines inside the circle on the left side as a guide for the anglerfish's pectoral fin.

Step 7: On the left side of the anglerfish's body, draw the guide for the tail using three curved lines.

Step 8: Add an angled line on the top and another on the bottom as guides for the other fins.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 9: Draw the eye as a small circle inside the big circle on the top right side. Add a tiny circle near the top of the eye to represent glare and a dot in the middle for the pupil. Shade the rest of the anglerfish's eye using a value that's slightly lighter than the pupil. Add a few short lines around the eye for more structure.

Step 10: Use the V-shaped line on the right as a guide to draw the anglerfish's open mouth. Simply darken the lines as you follow the path of the V. Add a few more lines around the mouth for extra detail.

Step 11: Draw the anglerfish's teeth that line the inside of the mouth. The teeth are basically long, thin triangle-like shapes. Don't overthink it. Just add the different-sized thin spikes all over the mouth.

Step 12: Add a few lines between the teeth for the far side of the jaw and inside of the anglerfish's mouth. Try not to overlap these lines with the teeth.

Step 13: Use the line on top of the head as a guide to draw the anglerfish's lure. Follow the basic path of the guide as you darken the lines and make the base thicker. Use the circle at the top as a guide to draw the tip. The actual lure is made up of a smaller circle.

Step 14: Use the lines inside the circle as guides to draw the pectoral fin. Draw the base of the fin as a short curved line. Then follow the guides to draw the rest of it. Make the left edge of the fin wavier to represent movement and add a few lines within the shape for detail.

Step 15: Use the shape on top of the anglerfish's body as a guide to draw the dorsal fin. Make it wavier and add some lines inside.

Step 16: Use the shape at the bottom to draw the pelvic fin the same as the dorsal fin.

Step 17: Draw the anglerfish's tail by using the shape on the left as a guide. Make the tail wavier and add some lines inside.

Step 18: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the anglerfish's head and body. Follow the basic path of the guides as you darken the lines and form the shape of the head and body. Add a few curved lines inside the head to the left of the anglerfish's mouth for the gills.

Step 19 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines that you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step (optional): Add some shading to your anglerfish drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Add the value lightly at first, then gradually build up to the level of darkness that you want. Don't worry too much about the shading if you're going to add more value on the next step.
You can add even more value throughout your anglerfish drawing for extra detail. Anglerfish don't have any patterns on their bodies, so just add a single even value to everything. Continue adding the value until the whole body is covered. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Add a lighter value than the body to the fins because they're fairly transparent. When shading the lure, use a very light value in the middle of the base and at the tip for a glowing effect.
