To draw this cartoon Unicorn step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

 

 

Step 1: Lightly sketch two small ovals for the cartoon unicorn's eyes. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. When you get the shapes of the eyes right, darken the lines. Inside each eye, draw two tiny circles to represent glare. Shade the inside of the unicorn's eyes using a dark value. Don't overlap the tiny glare circles as you shade the eyes. On the outer edge of each eye, draw three tiny lines for eyelashes.

 

Step 2: To the left of the eyes, draw a short line for the side of the face. Below that, draw a curved line for the cheek. Curve the line toward the right to create the bottom part of the head. There should be a big space between the unicorn's eyes and the bottom of the head. Below the eye on the left, draw two small circles and shade them in for the nostrils.

 

 

Step 3: High above the unicorn's eyes, draw a long, curved, horizontal line for the first part of the mane. Add a jagged spike near the middle of the line to represent a chunk of mane.

 

Step 4: Above that, draw a curved, sloping line for the parted mane. For the horn, draw a triangular line sitting on top of the line. Inside the cartoon unicorn's horn, draw a couple of curved lines to give it some ridges.

 

 

Step 5: To the right, draw a small, pointy arc with a line inside for the ear. To the left of the ear, draw a curved line for the rest of the unicorn's mane. Give the line a little spike for a clump of mane and don't overlap the horn as you draw the line.

Step 6: Starting at the bottom of the unicorn's ear, draw a series of curved, vertical lines for the rest of the mane. These curved lines should come to a point to create the tips of the mane.

 

Step 7: To the right, draw a few more curved, vertical lines to finish the shape of the mane. The curved lines should sit on top of each other. Draw a small spike at the bottom for the tip of the unicorn's mane.

 

 

Step 8: Under the cartoon unicorn's head, draw a line that curves down and then to the right for the chest. To the right of the mane, draw a line that curves to the right and then down for the back portion of the body.

 

Step 9: To the right of the chest, draw two long, vertical lines for the first front leg. At the bottom, draw two short, horizontal lines for the bottom of the unicorn's foot and the hoof.

 

 

Step 10: To the left, add the cartoon unicorn's other front leg by first drawing two short lines that slope to the left. Curve the lines so that they slope to the right and create the bent leg. At the bottom, draw a short line to close off the shape and another short line inside for the hoof.

Step 11: On the right side, draw the unicorn's hind leg the same way as the first front leg. Use two long , vertical lines with a couple of shorter lines at the bottom for the hoof.

 

Step 12: Draw a long, horizontal line to create the unicorn's belly. To the left of the first hind leg, draw the second hind leg the same way as the first.

 

 

Step 13: Starting on the top, right side of the body, draw a long line that curves down for the unicorn's tail. At the end of the line, draw three short spikes for the tips of the tail. Now close off the shape of the tail using a long, curved line at the bottom.

 

Step 14: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your cartoon unicorn drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

 

 

Final Step: Color your drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Color your cartoon unicorn however you'd like. I used yellow, pink and light green for a rainbow mane. The back of the mane is light blue, dark blue and purple. Use the same colors for the tail as well. Use light blue for the horn and pink for the hooves. Leave a strip on the hooves blank for shine. Add some light blue to the body for shadows. Add the blue mainly to the bottom and right edges of the unicorn's body. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
