Step 15: Now use the other lines as guides to draw the hind legs using the same technique. The hind legs should be wider at the top and become narrower near the bottom. Use longer strokes near the bottom of the foot to indicate the shaggier fur. The toes on the hind legs are longer, so use longer lines to create them. Draw a small triangle at the end of each toe for the claws. Draw the visible portion of the hind leg on the other side by using the initial line as a guide.
Step 16: Use the remaining lines as guides to draw the rest of the racoon's body and tail. Follow the path of the lines as you add the quick, short strokes throughout the body for a furry texture. Make the tail wider as you follow the path of the line. Use longer strokes for a shaggier tail.
Step 17 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Also re-draw any final sketch lines that you may have accidentally erased.
Final Step (optional): Add some shading to your raccoon drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value.
Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps ground the raccoon so it doesn't appear to be floating.
Add the distinctive "mask" around the raccoon's eyes. First sketch the curved lines above the eyes. Then add the shapes under the eyes that curve down to the cheeks and end on top of the nose. Shade the inside of the shape you just created using a dark value.
You can add more value throughout your raccoon drawing for extra detail. Add the value by using strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Add the rings around the tail as bars of a darker value. Make the bars thinner at the top near the base of the tail. It's a good idea to use reference for accuracy. And remember to pause the "How to Draw a Raccoon" video to draw at your own pace.
