For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the llama's body. The circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides. They should be about the same size. Notice the spacing between them.

Step 2: Draw a smaller circle on the top right side as a guide for the llama's head. The higher you place the circle, the longer the neck will be.

Step 3: Draw an angled line similar to the letter M on top of the head as a guide for the llama's ears.

Step 4: Draw a curved line on the right side of the llama's head as a guide for the muzzle.

 

 

Step 5: Draw a series of curved lines to connect the major shapes and form the llama's body.

Step 6: Draw four lines under the llama's body as guides for the legs. The lines in the front should be straight, while the ones in the back should be angled.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 7: Draw the llama's eye on the upper right side of the circle. The shape of the eye is similar to that of a flat football. Draw long lashes that extend over the llama's eye. Draw a few lines surrounding the eye for extra detail.

Step 8: Draw the llama's muzzle using the curved line as a guide. A small line makes up the nose. Then draw another line closer to the bottom that extends toward the circle for the mouth. A smaller curved line under the mouth makes up the llama's chin. Then draw a few lines surrounding mouth for extra detail.

 

 

Step 9: Draw the llama's ears using the M shape as a guide. Darken the shape of the ear and have it come down inside the circle a bit. Then use quick, short strokes within the shape to represent fur. Do the same for the llama's other ear.

Step 10: Use the remaining lines and shapes to draw the rest of the llama's head. Use quick, short strokes throughout the face to give it a furry look.

Step 11: Use the vertical lines as guides to draw the llama's neck. Just follow the lines and use quick, short strokes all the way down.

Step 12: Use the initial lines to draw the llama's hind legs. Use quick, short strokes at the top of the first leg for fur. Draw the two toes at the bottom. Do the same thing for the llama's leg on the other side.

Step 13: Draw the front legs using the same techniques as the hind legs. Draw the top part of the front legs a little less furry than the llama's hind legs. Don't forget the two toes at the bottom.

 

 

Step 14: Use the initial lines as guides to draw the rest of the body. Use slightly longer strokes when drawing the bottom part to give it a shaggier look.

Step 15: Draw the llama's tail on the upper left side. Draw it smoother on top and shaggier at the bottom.

Step 16 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Also re-draw any of the final lines you accidentally erase and draw a few detail lines on the face.

 

 

Final Step (optional): You can add some shading to give your llama drawing more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. It's a good idea to use reference to be as accurate as possible. Add a cast shadow underneath the llama. This helps ground the llama so it doesn't appear to be floating.

You can add more value throughout your llama drawing for extra detail. Use strokes that have the same direction that the fur is supposed to have.
