For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw an oval as a guide for the T. rex's body. The oval doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide.

Step 2: Draw a shape similar to an egg to the left of the oval as a guide for the dinosaur's head.

Step 3: Draw two intersecting lines inside the head to help place the T. rex's facial features later.

Step 4: Draw a couple of curved lines that connect the head to the body for the neck.

Step 5: Draw a curved line to the right of the body as a guide for the T. rex's tail.

Step 6: Draw two small angled lines on the lower left side of the body and close to the neck as guides for the dinosaur's arms.

Step 7: Draw another set of bent lines near the lower right side of the body for the T. rex's legs.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 8: Draw the T. rex's facial features using the intersecting lines as guides for placement. The eye is basically a small circle with an even smaller shaded circle inside of it to create the pupil. Draw a few lines surrounding the eye to create the cranial structure. A small, shaded slit at the tip of the head serves as the nose.

Step 9: Draw two wavy lines using the horizontal line as a guide to create the Tyrannosaurus rex's open mouth.

Step 10: Draw the teeth as a series of triangles lining the top and bottom of the mouth.

Step 11: Using the initial egg shape, draw the rest of the dinosaur's head. Draw a big, powerful lower jaw.

Step 12: Using the lines as guides, draw the T. rex's arms. Just go around the line adding folds of skin at the joints. Don't forget the two pointy claws at the end!

Step 13: Draw the T. rex's hind legs, again using the lines as guides. Draw them thick at the top and thinner at the bottom. Draw large claws at the end of the toes. The legs shouldn't be straight lines. They should bulge in and out to show the musculature. The right leg is hiding behind the body, so only draw the visible portion the same way you drew the first.

Step 14: Draw the rest of the T. rex's body using the lines as guides. Draw the lines a bit bumpy instead of straight to give the skin a rougher look.

Step 15: Draw the tail around the initial guide line and have it come to a point.

Step 16 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of them. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final lines that you accidentally erase.

Final Step (optional): Draw some shading to your drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Shading also emphasizes the skeletal and muscular structure. Add a cast shadow underneath. this helps ground the T. rex so it doesn't appear to be floating.

You can add more value throughout your drawing for extra detail. No one knows exactly what a T. rex looked like, so you can give it spots or stripes. This dinosaur could've even had feathers! To get this classic-looking T. rex, draw squiggly lines and stripes all over. Don't overthink it. Just add them randomly.
