Step 1: Drawing the Initial Guidelines

Begin sketching the base structure using very light, gentle pencil strokes. These lines will serve as a reference for you when you add the details later on.

Proportional Circles

• Head Guide: Mark the height and width limits of the circle you want to create, and then connect the marks with curved lines. You can trace an object with a circular edge, such as a coin or bottle cap, if you need assistance creating the shape.
• Front Body Guide: Below the head, add a circle twice its size. Do not let the top portion overlap the head guide.
• Rear Body Guide: To the right, sketch another circular shape that is slightly smaller than the front body circle.

Anatomy and Facial References

• Facial Construction Lines: Inside the head circle, add a horizontal curved guide line slightly above the center and a vertical curved guide line positioned closer to the right edge.
• Muzzle and Ears: Position a small circle for the muzzle on the lower half of the head between the horizontal guide line and the bottom edge. On top of the head, add two triangular ear shapes.
• Leg and Tail Lines: Extend two long vertical lines beneath the front body for the front legs, followed by a long vertical line and a long angled joint line under the rear body for the hind legs. Add short foot indicator lines at the bottom of each. Finally, sketch a long vertical line on the far right for the tail.
• Connecting the Torso: Attach the head to the body with a long curved line on the left and a short line on the right to build the neck. Connect the two body circles with subtle curved lines to build the torso outline.

Step 2: Drawing the Facial Features

With the primary guides established, define the details of the face with more distinct, darker lines.

Eyes, Nose, and Mouth

• Eyes: Position two small circles on the horizontal construction line. Darken the eye on the left with pointier corners, directing the inner corner downward. Make the right eye slightly smaller due to the perspective of the head. Add internal pupils, shading them in while leaving small, clean circles blank for highlights. Include a few short strokes at the top to mimic fur.
• Nose: Sketch a small circle inside the muzzle guide. Refine it by adding small circular nostrils, thinning the bottom edge, and adding a brief crease underneath alongside a horizontal line across the top plane.
• Mouth and Muzzle: Draw a long horizontal line for the mouth, curving it toward the left edge of the initial guide. Define the front profile of the muzzle by following the guide circle, and include a short lip line and a furry, textured chin below.

Ears and Head Texture

• Ears: Darken the triangular ear shapes. Add internal structural details and short, angled lines to simulate internal fur clumps. Curve the top tip of the right ear slightly more than the initial guide.
• Head Outline: Connect the outer profile of the head using brief, broken pencil strokes to give a realistic coat texture. Incorporate larger angled clumps for fur definition along the lower sides.

Step 3: Adding the Legs

Flesh out the leg structures, building up realistic volume and paw details.

• Front Legs: Sketch the first front leg thinly around the second guideline from the left, adding a square-like foot at the base. Darken the final line with angled joints and short texture lines, adding internal toe splits and tiny triangular claws. Repeat this process for the leftmost front leg, keeping the upper portion slightly wider and bending the shape to show the joint.
• Hind Legs: Use the rightmost leg guide to build a thick, wide hind leg. Contour the joint near the middle, darken your lines, separate the toes, and add triangular nails. For the last hind leg, sketch only the visible sections, as its right border sits behind the foreground leg.

Step 4: Finishing the Body and Tail

Complete the primary outline by connecting the torso and adding the tail.

• Body Outline: Trace the remaining torso guides using a series of brief strokes and jagged lines for a convincing coat. Be careful not to overlap the leg shapes as you complete the belly.
• Tail: Use short strokes along the vertical guideline on the right to define the final, furry look of the tail.

Step 5: Erasing Guidelines

Carefully remove your initial pencil guidelines to reveal the clean line art. Restore any details that may have been accidentally smudged or lost.

Step 6: Beginning the Shading Process

Bring your wolf to life by establishing initial shadows on the head and neck.

• Nose and Head: Render the nose with a deep, dark value, leaving a slender blank sliver at the top for a bright highlight. Gradually build dark values along the crown of the head by regulating pencil pressure.
• Fur Clumps: Sketch distinct V-shaped lines of varying sizes across the neck and chest to represent thick clumps of hair.

Step 7: Continuing Shading and Adding Definition

Coat the remainder of the torso and limbs with a consistent medium value. Use softer lead pencils like 2B or 4B to achieve darker gradients. Work your pencil strokes in the natural direction of the coat. The fur radiates outward from the nose on the face and falls vertically on the body.

Step 8: Adding a Ground and More Details

Add shadows underneath the body, reinforce the primary outlines for clarity, and place brief pencil strokes on the ground plane to create a realistic grassy texture. Keep the lower half of the head, the ears, and the patches around the eyes completely white to act as highlights against the gray fur. Review the drawing for any final adjustments until you are completely happy with the result!
