Written step-by-step video tutorial:

Start with Simple Lines and Shapes

Intro: For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

How to Draw a Red Fox Sitting 1

Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the fox's head. First draw four small marks to indicate the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make mistake. But the circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide.

DRAWING TIP: To draw a circle, first make four small marks for the height and width of the circle, and then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides.

Step 2: Draw a curved horizontal line across the head. This construction line will help you place the fox's facial features later. Add a curved vertical line on the top left side of the head for another construction line.

Step 3: Draw a small circle on the lower left side of the head as a guide for the fox's muzzle. Pay attention to the size and placement of this small circle in relation to the rest of the head.

Step 4: On top of the head, draw two small, triangle- like shapes as guides for the ears. Foxes have big ears, so don't draw these guides too small.

Step 5: Under the head, off to the left a bit, draw a big circle as a guide for the top part of the body. Like with the head, use small marks to draw the circle. This circle should be almost twice as big as the fox's head.

Step 6: Add the guide for the lower half of the fox's body by drawing three long, curved lines. This guide consists of two long, curved vertical lines on the sides and one shorter horizontal line at the bottom. Pay attention to how far down this guide goes. Don't draw it too short.

Step 7: Under the second circle, draw two long vertical lines as guides for the fox's front legs.

Step 8: Under the body, on the left side, draw a short, angled horizontal line as a guide for the hind leg. On the right side of the body, near the bottom, draw a long, curved line as a guide for the fox's tail.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Now Add Details

Step 9: Lightly sketch the eyeballs inside the head as two small circles. Use the initial lines as guides for placement. When you get the size and placement right, darken the lines. Make the sides darker and pointier to create the corners of the fox's eyes. The eye on the right should be a bit bigger because of the perspective of the turned head. The inner corners of the eyes should point down toward the muzzle. Continue making the lines around the eyeballs thicker until you get the shape of the eyes right.

Step 10: Inside each eye, off to the side, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. In the middle of each eye, draw the pupils using a dark value. Foxes have cat-like pupils, so draw them as thin slits. Shade in the rest of the eyes but don't overlap the small circle that represents glare. As you shade the eyeballs, use a value that's lighter than the pupils. Draw a series of quick, short strokes around the eyes for the fur.

Step 11: Draw the fox's nose inside the muzzle, near the left side, by first lightly sketching a small oval. When you get the size and placement of the oval right, darken the lines. Curve the sides inward to create the nostrils. Add a short, vertical line at the bottom to split the nose. Make the bottom pointier and add quick, short strokes at the top for the fur.

Step 12: Draw a long, wavy horizontal line under the nose for the mouth. The fox's mouth should stretch from one side of the initial circle to the other. Follow the path of the initial circle on the left side and darken the line to create the side of the muzzle. Use quick, short strokes to draw a curved line under the mouth for the fuzzy chin.

Step 13: Use quick, short strokes along the path of the triangle-like shape on the right to create the fox's first ear. Add a few longer strokes within the ear for the fur found there and a few extra lines for structure.

Step 14: Use the triangle-like shape on the left side as a guide to draw the fox's other ear the same way. Use quick, short strokes as you follow the path of the guide for a furry texture and add strokes inside too.

How to Draw a Red Fox Sitting 15

Step 15: Use quick, short strokes as you follow the edge of the circle to create the furry shape of the head. The top half of the fox's head (close to the eyes) should be narrower than the initial circle. The bottom half of the head should be wider and should extend outside of the main circle. Add a few more quick, short strokes within the head for a fur-like texture.

How to Draw a Red Fox Sitting 16

Step 16: Use the long, vertical line on the left side as a guide to draw the first front leg. Follow the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. The leg should be thin. The bottom should be wider for the paw. Darken the lines when you get the structure right. Add a few lines at the bottom to separate the toes. On each toe, draw a small slit-like shape for the fox's nails.

Stay Patient and Keep Drawing - You're Almost There!

How to Draw a Red Fox Sitting 17

Step 17: Use the vertical line on the right as a guide to draw the fox's other front leg. Lightly sketch the shape of the leg around the guide. Then darken the lines when you get the structure right. Make this leg similar to the first one so that the fox is pretty symmetrical. Use short vertical lines at the bottom for the toes and add a slit on each toe for the nails.

How to Draw a Red Fox Sitting 18

Step 18: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the body. Use quick, short strokes along the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the fox's furry body. Add a few more quick, short strokes within the body to emphasize the fur on the chest. Draw curved lines that are made up of quick, short strokes near the bottom for the folded hind legs.

How to Draw a Red Fox Sitting 19

Step 19: Draw the shape of the hind foot by using the line on the lower, left side as a guide. Use the curved line on the right as a guide to draw the fox's tail. First draw quick, short strokes along the outside of the guide. Then curve the strokes to create the inner edge of the tail. Make the shape of the tail big and wide.

How to Draw a Red Fox Sitting 20

Step 20: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Now It's Time to Shade

How to Draw a Red Fox Sitting

Final Step: Add some shading to your fox drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Don't worry about shading too smoothly. The rough value gives the coat a furry texture.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps ground the fox so it doesn't appear to be floating.

You can add even more value throughout your fox drawing for extra detail. Use a dark value on the tips of the ears, the nose and the side of the muzzle. Use a medium value for the top half of the head. Leave the bottom half (the cheeks) blank.

Separate each individual stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates a fur-like texture. Cover the top half of the head in value, then continue to add a medium value to the body as well. As you shade the body, use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Foxes have dark brown or lack legs and feet, so use a dark value for them too.

Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Use a medium value for the fox's tail. It's always a good idea to use reference as you draw. If you'd like, you can add more value to the chest. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
