Start with Simple Lines and Shapes

How to Draw a Flying Dragon Wyvern Fire 1

Step 1: Start by drawing three circles as guides for the dragon's body and head. Pay attention to the sizes and positions of the circles. The circle on the right should be the smallest because that will be the head. To draw each circle, first make four marks to determine the height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circles, just trace the outer rim of circular objects like coins or bottle caps. For a more detailed guide on the different ways to draw a circle check out this tutorial: Four simple ways to draw a circle.

Step 2: Connect the circles together using short, curved lines to finish the guide for the dragon's body. On the left side, draw two long, curved lines to create the guide for the tail. Make the base of the tail wide and the tip thin and pointy. Inside the head draw a two curved lines as construction guides to help you position the facial features later on.

Step 3: On the right side of the head circle, draw two curved lines as guides for the dragon's jaws. The lines should be similar to small arcs. On top of the body, draw two very long, angled lines as guides for the wings. Pay attention to how these lines bend as this will indicate where the joints are. Under the circle on the left, draw two smaller angled lines as guides for the legs. These lines should be similar to the letter N.

That's it for the guidelines! From this point on, press down harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a dragon.

Step 4: Inside the head draw a small diamond-like shape for the dragon's eye. Place the eye on top of the horizontal construction line. Above the eye add a spiky shape using triangular lines for the thick brow. Add the other brow on top, right edge of the head circle using three more spikes. Darken the top arc but make it wavier to create the top jaw. Add a few tiny, curved lines for the nostrils.

Step 5: Use the arc at the bottom as a guide to draw the dragon's lower jaw. Add a few curved lines inside the shape to create the open mouth. At the top, draw a series of V-shaped lines for the row of teeth.

Step 6: Inside the dragon's mouth, along the lower edge, draw a series of small, triangular shapes for the bottom row of teeth. Draw two curved lines for the tongue. On top of the head, draw two long, pointy shapes for the horns. Pay attention to how the horns curve. Dragons are mythical creatures, so you can change the horns however you'd like.

Step 7: Draw a couple more triangular shapes on the left side of the dragon's head for more horns. Darken the lines for the neck but extend the shape farther inside the body. Draw a series of small triangles along the top edge of the neck to create spikes. Close to the bottom of the neck, draw a line for the underside of the body.

Step 8: Use the angled line on the left as a guide to draw the dragon's first wing. Add an angled line close to the tail to create the outer edge of the wing. Add a pointy shape on the top, right corner for a spike. Draw the bottom edge of the wing using curved lines to create spiky segments. The resulting shape should be similar to bent triangle.

Step 9: Draw the dragon's arm-like shape that connects to the body using the initial angled line as a guide. Bend the shape and add a spike on the bottom corner. Add a line on the left side to give the wing another segment. Draw the lower edge of the wing using curved lines that connect to the body. Draw a sloping line at the top for extra skin on the wing. This is a wyvern type of dragon, so the wings are essentially the extended arms as opposed to other dragons that have regular arm appendages and wings on the back.

Stay Patient and Keep Drawing - You're Almost There!

Step 10: Use the lines on the right as guides to draw the dragon's other wing the same way. Add a couple of segments in the middle of the shape using a couple of lines. The middle segment should be similar to an upside-down letter V. Add the bottom edge of the wing using curved lines. Add the top part of the wing using a sloping line above the head. Don't forget to add a small, pointy shape on the top corner of the wing for a spike.

Step 11: Use the lines under the body as guides to draw the dragon's legs. Draw the shape of each leg around the guide line. The tops of the legs should be wide and they should overlap the feet. Pay attention to how these shapes bend to create the joints. Make the fee thin and add a couple of short, curved lines at the bottom for the toes.

Step 12: Darken the outer edges of the shapes in the middle to create the body. Don't overlap the wings or legs as you draw the shape. Add a row of small triangles along the top edge for the spikes on the back. On the tip of the tail, add another small triangle for the arrow-like spike.

Step 13: Draw a series of short lines along the bottom of the dragon's body for the scales on the underside. Close to the mouth, draw a thin, curved shape for the fire. Make the left side of this shape narrow and the right side wide. Add a few wavy lines along the edges for flames.

Step 14: Go over the final lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. Don't ink the initial guide lines, only the final drawing. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing of a dragon.

Now It's Time to Color

Final Step: Now color your dragon drawing! Dragons are mythical creatures so you can color your drawing however you'd like. For this look, use purple for the main part of the body, dark purple for the underside of the wings, the horns and the spikes and light purple for the underside of the body. Use dark brown for the inside of the mouth and red for the tongue. Color the fire using orange for the outer edges and yellow for the inside. Coloring can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.
