To draw this Giganotosaurus step by step, follow along with the video tutorial and pause after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

Materials You’ll Need

Before starting, gather these basic drawing supplies:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Start with Simple Lines and Shapes

Step 1: Start by drawing two circles as guides for the Giganotosaurus' body. The circle on the right should be slightly smaller than the circle on the left. To draw each circle, first make four marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circles, just trace the outer rim of circular objects like coins or bottle caps. For a more detailed guide on the different ways to draw a circle check out this tutorial: Four simple ways to draw a circle.

Step 2: On the top, right side, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the Giganotosaurus' head. This circle should be about half the size of the big body circle. On the right side of the head circle, draw two curved lines as guides for the jaws. Each line should be similar to an arc on its side. Pay attention to the sizes of the jaws in relation to the head.

Finish Up the "Skeleton"

Step 3: Under the big body circle, draw a two long, angled lines as guides for the Giganotosaurus' hind legs. Bend the lines near the middle to indicate the joints and again at the bottom for the feet. Under the circle in the middle, draw two shorter lines as guides for the arms.

Step 4: Connect the circles together using short, curved lines to finish the guide for the Dinosaur's body. On the left side, draw two long, wavy, horizontal lines to create the guide for the tail. The tail should be about the same length as the entire body. Make the base of the tail wide and the tip thin and pointy.

That's it for the guidelines! From this point on, press down harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a Giganotosaurus Dinosaur.

Now Add Details

Step 5: Inside the top arc, draw a small circle for the Giganotosaurus' eye. Place the eye near the right edge of the head circle. Make the sides of the shape pointy for the corners of the eye. Inside the eye draw two small circles for the pupil and for a highlight. Shade in the pupil. Draw a few lines around the eye for the bony structure. Above the eye, draw a series of short angled lines for the bony scales. Follow the path of the guide as you draw the scales.

Step 6: Darken the initial arc-like guides to create the Giganotosaurus' jaw. Make the lines a bit wavier as you darken them. The mouth should stretch farther to the left and inside the head circle. Draw a few lines inside the top jaw for structure and the nostril.

Step 7: Draw a series of small, triangular shapes along the inner edges of the jaws to create the Giganotosaurus' teeth. Darken the initial guides for the head. At the top, draw a series of triangular shapes for the spiky scales. Add a few more lines inside the head to emphasize the bony structure.

Stay Patient and Keep Drawing

Step 8: Use the second line from the left under the body as a guide to draw the Giganotosaurus' hind leg. Draw the shape of the leg around the guide. The top of the leg should be wide and the bottom narrow. Inside the foot, draw a short, curved line for the toes. On the tip of each toe, draw a small, triangular shape for the claws. Use the smaller line to the right as a guide to draw the arm the same way. Draw the shape of the arm around the guide and add three thin, pointy shapes at the bottom for the digits.

Step 9: Draw the Giganotosaurus' limbs that are on the other side of the body using the remaining lines under the body as guides. Just like before, draw the shapes of the limbs around the guide lines. Curve the shape of the hind leg to emphasize the step forward. Add the nails at the end of the toes. Make the tips of the digits on the arm pointy for the claws too.

Step 10: Darken the outer edges of the initial guide lines to finish the Giganotosaurus' body. Don't overlap the limbs that are on this side as you darken the underside of the body. Draw a series of small, triangular shapes along the top edge of the body for the spikes on the back. Make the spikes big near the middle and smaller toward the tail.

Now It's Time to Shade

Step 11: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Shade your drawing for extra detail. Nobody is exactly sure what Giganotosaurus looked like so you can shade your drawing however you'd like. This is the version from the movie. To achieve this look, simply shade using a series of squiggly lines all over the body to create a rough, scaly texture. Don't overthink it; just add random squiggly lines to create texture. Draw a few horizontal lines at the top to create bigger scales. Add a stripe-like pattern by shading darker patches throughout the body. Use a darker value to create shadows. Shadows will give the figure more dimension and volume. Shade lightly at first and gradually build up to darker values. For light values, push down very lightly on your pencil and push down harder for darker values. Add a cast shadow at the bottom using a medium value. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. For a more detailed guide on how to shade, check out this tutorial: How to shade.
